i just ordered a slr camera.
anyone have any suggestions on
ISO, shutter speed, aperature for taking softball pictures?
esp batting and pitching.

I know i am going to have to play with it, but will get it about 2 days before a tournament, so any info going into the weekend would be helpful.

thanks

ISO for any outdoor sport should be at least 200(day use)/400(night use). The higher the ISO/ASA rating the grainer the photos will be. Shutter speed and aperture vary depending on the lighting conditions (bright and sunny vs. overcast). For better depth of field try F16. This is also handy for eliminating the chain link fence from the photos.
To each their own.

70 - 200 MM Lens - get the best lens you can afford
Speed priority on bright days 1/750 or better for stop action
Focus lock is your friend
ISO 100 or 200

I shoot with a Canon 10D. If I were to upgrade, I would upgrade the body to the 5D. I think it shoots 7fps vs 3fps. Other than that, I'm really happy with my setup.

On a camera/lens like that, you'll probably find that the best shooting will occur when you set the ISO and AWB to auto (as Rotator suggested, ISO will probably land around 125-200 on most sunny days)

You'll have to play with the settings but I find most of my best quality will come around f8 or f9 on a 4-5.6 lens. If you are zoomed all the way in, edges often end up a bit soft so try to stay under the 150mm or so range. (use your computer to resize it later)

So far as shutter speed, again, you'll have to play with things on a given day, but I try to shoot above 1/2000th if light permits for stop action. Perfect stop action isn't always desireable though - sometimes a bat blur or a background/foreground blur adds to the image, in which case I sometimes go to 1/250th. The slower the shutter speed, the more light and (usually) the better the image quality...

That Xsi is a nice little camera for the money - I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Being from NorCal, what do I know anyway???

just got it delivered today.

thanks to everyone, our first game sat is 1:20 so it should be bright and sunny. (not sure how we got that lucky, we seem to always have an 8am game)
