Perhaps I'm wrong but based on the timing of the post and the opponents LL played the previous weekend, I have a sense as to who the coaches are Bill is referring to in his post. My gut tells me he is referring to two different head coaches on two different teams...

Having put my daughter on one of those teams the past two years (and moved on this year) with one of the presumed coaches, I would suggest to Bill that he should not confuse demanding with demeaning.

Looking back... I have the utmost respect for one of the presumed coaches. Not one time did I feel that my daughter was "abused". She was pushed to the limits of her abilities. She looks back at this presumed coach with great respect and admiration and to this day will seek him out at friendlies to say hello and a hug... which is always returned, as the respect between the two is mutual.

There are different things that floats each others boats... I respect your opinion Bill and the decisions you make to place your DD in the spot that you feel is best for her... but I will say... It is very easy to make assumptions about other coaches (and feel compelled to post about them) when you are truly on the outside looking in and know very little about them.

Trust me... those who have not experienced the day in and day out workings of this one coach I am familiar with.. truly does not get it.

I will have to agree there is a fine line. I coach 10U and 8U and have seen some coaches who yell to much and some others who are softies IMO. I generally am a loud person but there is a difference between being load and being abusive. A coach can actually be more abusive with the things that are said one on one with the player than the things that are said loud enough for all to hear. With my own kid I usually do not have to say anything she reads my actions and knows she screwed up without me saying anything. With others it is all in how you handle it. A coach can be loud and correcting issues without ever actually being negative to the kids and get great results.

I'd just like to add that there is NEVER a scenario where it's appropriate to loudly scold, berate, yell at 8u players. Anyone who bawls out a 7 year old over a game needs therapy.

Agree but I decided to concede some for the "sake of argument". After all, we're on a board
where I have seen yelling at 10U players defended .

Speaking of that, I challenge any of you defending this behavior to come back when your dd's are 16 or 17 and read your posts. I challenge you to not be embarrassed.

I expect a coach to set the bar high as does my DD. I expect them to have high expectations as does DD. (Right now on her HS team her one comment has been I am tired of the lack of discipline, the lack of accountability, the lack of leadership) I expect them to run an organized, highly demanding, tough practice with plenty of discipline. I also expect them to correct a problem when they see by correcting the skill/behavior/mistake not to demoralize the girls character that is just not acceptable at any age. Address the performance not the character. I don't expect the girls to walk all over the coach either....that shows them nothing, about commitment to players, team, and appreciation for coaches time either. You don't have to be loud and abrasive to cause problems. I know one coach who impacted his players much more by sitting down on the bench, not saying a word, and basically holding his head in his hands...that made the girls feel like he had given up, his actions spoke way louder then his words believe me, to both the players and the parents. I personally don't have the temperment to be a coach, I would probably do all the wrong things in the wrong way. I would hope to never attack a girls character, but since I know i don't possess these qualities I let coaches that do coach my DD.
