I'm a coach too, for my youngest DD's team, although it would be much more funny if I just walked out there from the stands while watching my oldest's team and took the ball and chucked it over the fence!

How idiotic. I have seen 3-4 balls in circulation on those wet days. All the coaches holding rags to dry the balls etc. For an umpire to deny a different ball is retarded.

If the blue told my pitcher that and I took the ball and threw it over the fence into the woods, he/she would have to give my pitcher another ball...although I may have been watching the rest of the game from the parking lot, the look on the face may have been worth it.

Years ago when I actually played in a mens fastpitch league up in northern Minnesota our pitcher asked for a new ball and when denied the next pitch went over the backstop and about 200 hundred feet into a swamp behind the field. Umpire called it a ball and gave him a new one. One of the funniest things I ever saw.

Or if it were a timed game and your team was loosing, the umpire could wait until the ball was retrieved before continuing play while keeping the clock running. Tick tock tick tock says the face on the clock.

There is a good reason for proper ball rotation and the rules.

However, there must be a modicum of common sense. Changing out a damaged or wet ball is a no brainer.

You don't just start trading out balls just because someone asks you to. The reason for the rules is to keep the ball out of the strategy of the game. And before you start thinking that no coach would do that, reread half the posts on this and other boards about "bush" moves by coaches or a team.
