What should a parent do in this situation? A coach's daughter plays a certain position regularly. The coach moves a different player into his DD's primary position, but instead of putting his DD on the bench, he moves her to YOUR daughter's primary position, where the coach's DD rarely plays, let alone practices, and YOUR daughter sits on the bench so coach's DD can spend every second of every game out on the field.
1. DD should go to the coach and ask him what she needs to improve on to get onto the field.
2. Do your part to make sure your daughter has every oportunity to be a good hitter. Good batters don't sit (if they do, you may be on a team that's going nowhere).
3. Choose your travel teams carefully. It's a big invesment like buying a car. One must do their due diligence and homework. If you know you will be in the market for a new team the following year, start watching the "cadidates". Sit in the stands without giving away your agenda and listen to the parents. Watch the coaches behavior when they're not putting on their "best face" for a recruit. Also, you'd be surprised how much you can learn about the dynamic of the team by chatting up a parent or two.
Number 3 has paid big dividends for us. My kid has been in travel ball for 8 years and has never been treated unfairly by a coach (any time she has been "moved" from a position, it has been because she deserved it or it was better over all for the team concept). Plus since we always feel sure of a coach when we commit, there's a trust there and I don't even analyze or pay much attention to his decisions. I just show up and drop the kid off. If she sits a game or whatever, it barely registers.
It's a very "free" feeling be in a situation where you don't feel compelled to look over the coach's shoulder. So check them out first!
