Catcher / Throwing hand?

What's on your mind?

by HoosierCoach » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:14 am

My DD just started catching, and initially was told to put her throwing hand behind her back. She has since changed to placing it behind her right ankle, which I believe to be good. But I have heard of some making a fist and placing it behind the glove (I know it should be there when blocking).
opinions?

Also, does anyone know of any good catching videos?

With nobody on base, the bare hand is protected from possible injury on a foul tip by placing it behind the back or on the ankle. With a runner on base, you want the hand in a fist (protection still) behind the glove for a quicker transition for the throw (and/or to block).

Killer Rabbit,

That is exactly what I teach. Be sure when they make the fist that the thumb is inside the fist.

When they recieve with runners on as soon as they read that no one is running or they will not have to block they should draw the throwing hand back to the chest protector so no chance the hand is "hanging in space" when the bat is moving.

Below is a picture of where that hand would end up after receiving pitch. Notice the thumb inside the fist

Thanks for visiting Coach Weaver.....I would like to second the recommendation of the New England Catching Camp video. Although I played the position (in baseball) as well as instructing many successful players in the past. I learned a ton from this video. One thing that is very effective is the way that the moves utilize the bodies natural instincts to put the player in the correct position. It is so much easier to work with your body than against it. I have three of the videos because I have at least 2 loaned out all the time.

This video is also a MUST for highlevel catchers to teach them to view the pitch from the umpires perspective. I learned to "present" pitches from an old umpire 35 years ago but Coach Weaver expains it much better than anyone I have ever seen.
