Upcoming Gold Tryouts

What's on your mind?

by 3Bsnag » Fri Oct 17, 2008 10:55 am

Noticed some teams have tryouts again in the next few weeks. Why?

- In case someone made a wrong choice and wants to switch?
- A team picked up someone they don't want and will let go?
- Trying to get rosters set before the new Gold qualifying tournaments in Jan/Feb?
- Something else?

I just find it odd that teams are having tryouts less than 3 months after summer tryouts.

I think it is the same reason everywhere - the talent is watered down so none of the teams except maybe the top ones are full. Gold also costs a lot of money, and if I had to guess, there may be kids dropping out this year and just playing more local tournaments.

Or maybe the fall recruiting season will be over soon and there is some fine tuning going on for next summer. This is no ordinary Fall or Winter, given the proposed limitation on the number of Gold teams in Region 14 next year.

Maybe they still need players.

The postings were for 2 well known NorCal teams and got me wondering. Thanks for the thoughts.

Many, but not all, of these gold teams have a starting date for tryouts but no hard ending date. They are constantly trying to upgrade the talent, so if a good player becomes available, the roster will be expanded to accomodate that player, even after tryouts have ended and the team has been selected. In addition, more players on the roster = more revenue added to the bottom line. That is why some of the teams end up with 20 or more on the roster.

At least one of those well known NorCal teams did not have tryouts for fall, so this is the first try-out they are having since getting back from winning "the big one".

Well, at least the big one for the age group they were in this past summer. Is that better Spaz?

I would think that with all the recruiting going on in 16u, winning 16 A Nationals would be considered winning the big one for that age group.

The original post asked " I just find it odd that teams are having tryouts less than 3 months after summer tryouts."
My point, though lost, was this. At least one of those teams DID NOT hold tryouts three months ago.
