I have a recruiting question.

If a player is offered a 75% scholarship can you counter offer that or is that offensive?

Along the same lines, if you are told that there is little or no athletic money available for freshman year but there would be for sophomore year, can you ask how much? Could you ask that the amount be included somehow in a LOI? I've heard that a LOI only covers year by year, so how could you be assured of getting the money offered for the sophomore year?

In my experience, don't look at the % offered; look at the Dollar amount not covered. Example: Athlete A is offered 75% to a private university; Athlete B is offered 50% to a Mid-Major D1 and Athlete C is offered 40% to a Top 25 D2. Who got the best offer? Well, what a lot of people don't realize is there are a lot of things covered over and above the % offer at some institutions. So, a 50% offer to a Mid-Major D1 may end up costing a whole lot less then that 75% offer to the private institution or the 40% offer to the Top 25 D2 may even cost less then the mid-major.

I have even seen where a kid was offerd the same 70% offer to 3 different schools in the same conference and all 3 would have been a signifigant difference (several thousand dollars) in actual cost to attend. So, look at the bottom line of what it will actually cost to send your kid there for 4-5 years, not the % offered.

Numero - Your question is difficult to answer, some coaches maybe offended if they feel they have tendered their best offer, especially if they aren't in a position to negotitate... If they have not tendered a fair initial offer and have extra "play" money, and they really want your daughter, then maybe they won't be offended....

What do you expect/want? 75% seems pretty good, especially if it's 75% of everything - tuition, housing, books, food etc...

Show me with your offer your committment to my daughter.... To me 75% shows that the school is committed to the player

TEG makes a VERY good point 75% can certainly be different from school to school and I agree that the bottom line to look at is what is my total out of pocket with the offer?

SB - You are correct LOI's are for one year... You can ask how much might be available the sophmore year but if the school can't offer a scholarship as a freshman I would be cautious on expecting money the sophmore year.... I'm not saying it doesn't happen it does and you can ask, but the best way to ensure sophmore money is to have a blazing freshman year!

Whether a coach is offended by a counter proposal may depend how the negotiations are handled. It is one thing to tell the coach that you simply cannot afford to pay the difference and ask if there is a way they can do better and another one to play one scholarship offer from against another.

As for LOI's covering only one year, yes this is true, but I have never heard of an instance with a player received less scholarship money after the freshman year, but I have heard of many instances where scholarships were increased.

When I used to make a scholarship offer, it was final. I normally did not have more money available.

Won't your DD be getting scholastic money also? That is what you need to find out. It could be that you end up paying zero.

The situations that I liked were the ones that came in on a total scholastic scholarship.

At U of IL, Itch Jones (baseball) only gives 75% scholarships. He says that the student needs to contribute something.

Don't put much faith in talk about year 2. The coach could be gone by then.

I think that your DD should just figure out which college she wants to go to for her education and see what falls in place.

lmao, 75% is a real decent offer for athletics, Now the grades come into play & one would hope the SAT & ACT scores are high enough to make up the rest.
