Confusion over 18 Gold Policy

Up here in Sacramento, we get to pay our $450 for a round robbin to be "evaluated" for Gold status..

Maybe you should have played Gold this fall? Playing against 14 and 15 year olds with your pitchers throwing at 40 ft isn't the best way to prepare you to qualify for Gold.

Who knew ASA would go this route. We had already set our schedule and paid for our tournaments. Hindsight is 20-20. As I said, ASA has made it just about impossible for a 16A team to get in the qualifier. So by default, we'll be in 18A.

Is that as bad as it sounds? Do scouts/coaches pass up watching 18A players if they are available or have sparked the interest of a coach through promoting themselves to certain schools?

Yours is exactly the type of team that should be in 18A. You have never qualified for ASA Nationals in a younger division and you have no chance to qualify at the Gold level. One of the great things about this sport is that there is a team for everybody - but they aren't all gold quality teams! Your players would have a more realistic chance at being competitive at 18A, and that isn't the end of the world. This is not meant to be a slam on you or your team, just a dose of reality.

ASA rarely posts any info until you are in that calender year, and even then it is sporadic. If you look on their websites there is no tournament info of any kind for 2009.
The info will most likely be given out at the coaches meeting.

The whole situation is hilarious...if you're not a young lady playing Gold ball in SoCal. Spazsdad is likely right...they will dole out the info at the managers meeting....the day before the Super Bowl....Saturday, February 7th....they will hand out information on 18 Gold Qualifier Tournaments which have to be held during the following two weekends at locations yet determined. So this is the schedule for Gold:

7 Feb - Mgrs Meeting
10 Feb - 1st Gold Qualifier Entry Fee Due
12 Feb - Schedule
13 Feb - 1st Gold Qualifier Tournament Begins
15 Feb - 1st Gold Qualifier Ends
17 Feb - 2nd Gold Qualifier Entry Fee Due
19 Feb - Schedule
20 Feb - 2nd Gold Qualifier Tournament Begins
21 Feb - High School Scrimmage Games
21 Feb - 2nd Day of 2nd Gold Qualifier
22 Feb - 2nd Gold Qualifier Ends

They really thought this one out. And under their new little system, it is now impossible in the SoCal Assosciation to field a team of college freshmen....all D1 PAC 10 recruits....because they couldn't participate in their little qualifier tournaments....so you could put together a team that would be favored to win Gold Nationals...but couldn't play Gold because of the REGION's rules...they would have to play 18A....or 23U.

This is a group of individuals that would have quite a load of trouble finding their poop shutes with both hands and a flashlight....

All you have to do is go to the So Cal ASA website to get the information you need about these Gold Classification tournaments.

You're right, sweetheart, they are having the first tourney in January....at a secret location.....and not makeup date.

The second tourney has no makeup date....and they have no idea what to do if one or the other gets rained out. You are right, though, I am not knowledgeable....its obvious that the SoCalASA folks running Gold and 18A....the Chula Vista Mafia....are really knowledgeable.

Yeah, and evaluated by who? Please tell me it won't include the JO commish. You know, the one who runs her own softball school and has two Gold teams of her own......Conflict of Interest? You decide!

If you applied the logic that a team never qualified for an ASA National tournament, then 80% of the S. Cal 16s team would be eliminated. Should they all go to 18A when they move up? Why have 50 S. Cal 18 Gold teams when 80% of those won't qualify. The rich just keep on getting richer.
