For those of you who continue to parrot that "speed doesn't matter," you need to start asking the Div. I college coaches where your daughter hopes to play because I've had too many tell me that they just won't even recruit a pitcher who can't throw in the 63-plus range regardless of their ability to move the ball. That may not be where they "work" but they better be able to hit that speed on the coaches' radar gun.

Well that statement isn't true because I watched about 4 college games this weekend in Palm Springs, Ca and there were several pitchers pitchers pitching right around 60 mph and they were starters?????

Root, I am sure you know this already but those that say that 'speed doesn't matter are either already throwing in the 60s or will never get there and need an excuse. My dds excuse - she has to be mad to throw in the 60s. Her average speed seems to be 58-59 (as checked by one of those Collegiate Recruiters guys with a stalker gun this weekend), until pissed. Recently, she was pitching at a tournament, hitting her 58-59s, then the other coach did something, probably breathed air or something, made her mad, and the guy with the gun came over and told me she had hit 63 3 or 4 times in a row.

Just a guess, but I'll bet that very soon she will be passed over for pitcher on the high school team because the junior pitcher is in the 60s. If that doesnt piss her off, I will find her a soccer team to play on.

HAHAHA, that sounds like my kid. She gets faster the more pissed she gets. I have had a stalker gun (I like that) say my kid was hitting 60. Do I believe it??? Nah, every gun is different some faster some slower. I think I will wait till some Collegiate Recruiter tells her other wise. Thing I find, some (not all) parents that have guns walk around saying their dd is pitching 62+ and they know if for a fact cause they have gunned her.

I like the parents who just do it and keep it to themselves and use it as a tool like Donnie just to track between them what going on.

How do you keep your DD from getting to tense when she's pissed? I may start yelling "pissed and loose" instead of "long and loose".

I know what you are saying, older dd when she gets tense, speeds up her fielding, overtries, pretends its my head she is hitting at the plate, etc. Pitching dd, when she gets tense, squints her eyes, glares at me (whats new), and focuses to the point of scary, and the speed ticks up.

I would just be guessing, but a Div. I college pitcher "pitching right around 60 mph" in a game likely can easily hit 63 mph on radar gun if they wanted to. . . again, they might not "work" at 63-plus (ie., Cat Osterman), but they dang sure can throw that hard if they choose too. I've had one top-tier Div. I coach tell me that they won't look at kid who can't at least touch 65 mph on their gun.

I agree with you here! My point was that I did see D-1 pitchers being relatively successfull Saturday pitching right around that speed. I didn't have a speed gun with me of course so exact speed is unknown but it is in that ballpark so to speak.....Obviously, faster pitchers have that extra weapon that slower pitchers don't but you can be successfull in the low 60's so it's not all about speed......Florida (I think) had a girl that could really bring it and she was very effective doing so but Fresno State had a girl who did just fine at the lower speeds....Granted, they also weren't playing a top 10 either.....

What I enjoy is hearing from all the dads saying their DD throws 62 & then I clock her in a game throwing 55 mph.

I bet the Georgia Tech pitcher who hit 71 against Loyola has a radar gun.
