Why Softball over other sports

What's on your mind?

by heybucket » Wed May 14, 2008 9:40 pm

Why did you pick softball for your DD over other sports. I have friends whose DD's played Softball and Soccer, Softball and Volleyball and Softball and Basketball but now all of them are playing softball only. Why do we love this sport so much? :)

DDs play basketball for 6months and softball for 6 months.
Bsketball is the full contact sport my girls can play when the tundra is frozen here for 5 months (we never got into hockey). It keeps them in shape for what we love.....softball.
DuUHH 8-)
Softball....makes us go outside.
Each team-mate (position) has a very distinct job to do.
hitting, bunting, stealing, slapping.....reactions to hitting, bunting, stealing and slapping
base hits, doubles, triples, HOME-RUNS and OVER-THE-FENCE-HOME-RUNS
signs, the mental game......and the mind games
the silliness...the seriousness
the (sometimes) super-human effort and the (sometimes) effortless super-human plays
teams cheering for thier team-mates, friends supporting thier team-mates, teams cheering for other teams

lead-offs, steals and full-tilt sprinting, double-plays..TRIPLE PLAYS, sunflower seeds
diving catches and sliding in for a "SAFE" call
pitching magic "Strike Three..batter's out"
catchers and great tags
flip flops and sandals
good calls, bad calls and close calls...."She's Outta There!"
being able to recall every play of the game
watching the short-stop catch a low line drive for the out then throwing out the lead-off runner at first
double-plays to end the game with a 3-2 win
dirty scrapes, muddy uniforms, grass stains
I could go on.....I love softball and my girls have a scrimmage tonight. :D

Where else can we spend this much money on bats that we really want for ourselves and where else can we brag that our 12 YO is throwing 62 mph?

I guess in basketball we could say that DD scored x number of points, but that is easily checked.

It could be because girls of any size can be great in softball. Size helps, speed helps, but we all know smaller kids or slower kids that have done well if softball. It requires a lot more work to master than the other sports you mentioned. And its a sport that most of us parents, and most of us played baseball, can help them at least get started.

Both of my girls at home still play other sports - the 17 y/o plays volleyball and track as well as softball, the 14 y/o plays tennis, volleyball, basketball, and track - but will give up tennis for softball as a freshman.

Hard question to answer. I didn't choose the sports for my kids. They choose. They asked to play soccer and softball. From the time they were 2 weeks old, they were at the softball field with DH or myself. Soccer was around because of school. Both of my DD played club level soccer and were good at it, even asked to play on top teams, but in the end, they decided to go to softball.

Oldest only does softball, she like working out with the trainer at the school. They will start again soon and work through the summer. Youngest is going to try HS volleyball. She has only played in middle school, but was asked to play club level volleyball by a couple of clubs. She will only play VB in HS.

Good topic.

We did the shotgun approach to sports: soccer, teeball/softball, ice skating (hoping for hockey), lacrosse & horseback riding.....DD plays Rec soccer. She could play travel soccer but doesn't love it enough to apply herself....she concentrates on her love of riding horses, lacrosse and softball......lacrosse and softball create a challenge as they as both Spring sports , so we juggle quite a bit.....games have priority over practice and if games occur on the same night DD selects which game to play in....both coaches understand she is doing both and work with us.....this will work itself out as DD loves both lacrosse and softball but will have to choose soon. Horseback riding lessons are scheduled around softball and lacrosse.

For us it was the sport that she just took to. DD played soccer, but she is not very fast and while she enjoys the sport she realizes that it is probably not the best sport for her. Basketball never appealed to DD. Volleyball she really likes and plays at her junior high. She played club ball this spring. That is till she broke her wrist and we could not finish the season. I am sure she will continue volleyball next year.

BUT SOFTBALL!!!! She enjoys it the most. As do I. All the reasons stated above!!! :D It is just a great sport that typically has great families who become great friends. Also, it is the one sport I do have a little knowledge of and I can coach my DD's team. I would not trade these years for anything.
