QUALIFING out of STATE......HOW DID THEY DO

What's on your mind?

by Fasterpitch » Tue Aug 05, 2008 12:02 pm

prior to nationals there was alot of talk fron California teams about how they have to qualify out of state.

It was said that there are not enough spots for all of the good teams to earn a berth.

How did the teams ( non-GOLD) that made to commitment to travel across the national for a berth do in all age groups.

IN 16U the American Athletics traveled to Mass. ( it think) and went out in the 3rd round. I think they tied with 30 other teams for 67th place. HOw was this worth it. I saw this team play.

California is very good and knowone can that that away from them at this point. But unless you take the top 10 in all divisions how can anyone say that Cali needs more spots in Nationals.

So you are arguing that the Boston Boneheads should have gone to ASA Nationals and been able to finish in last place??? What is your point?

Their team got to compete at ASA Nationals in front of college coaches....I would say that was worth going. Lots of Gold teams travel to NJ every year just to play in meaningless games....in front of college coaches.

Calm down........In posts prior to Nationals, Cali "posters" never said anything about playing in front of College coachs. They kept talking about how they deserve more berths because EVERY team is so good. So good that they have to travel out of California to qualify.

As I was looking it up, most of the teams that did not qualify in there home state did not do that well at Nationals. It was just a observation.

Many said to wait until after nationals and we would see and those team that were unable to qualify in Cali would be in the top 20 if not the Top 10.

Go back and read the posts..They are there for the reading.

Nationals is over ( minus GOLD) and I do not see alot of top 20's. I did see alot of top 33, 55 and 65.

Just an observation.

I wasn't shouting.

Let's take your numbers....Even if you finish in 67th place, you have finished higher than at least 40 other teams.....finish 33rd and you're higher than 80 other teams.....and, regardless...they finished higher than the team that would have gone had the SoCal team stayed at home and not gone out of state to qualify. The argument can further be made that a team who had to go out of state to qualify, wouldn't do as well at Nationals because of being required to make two long trips to play in lieu of one....that Nationals would be supremely dominated by SoCals if the number of berths were increased for the association.

If a team from the Northeast Region has never finished higher than last at ASA Nationals...what is the harm in taking their berth and giving it to a more deserving team from SoCal?

I agree with Sam.....Besides all that, if So Cal didn't get those additional berths there would be very little college softball on the East Coast and Midwest.....The majority of those schools are loaded with players from So Cal. Yes, I know I'm about to get 50,000 Colleges named that don't have any or few So Cal girls on them.......Watch the World Series, there were a hell of a lot of So Cal girls there playing for other than So Cal schools.....

I can play with the numbers all day.

You are reading to much into this. I was only going off of the words that Cali posters were making on this board. Its not personal ......Well I guess it would be if "SAM" had a daughter on the American Athletics and spent a minimun of $4000 to travel out of state beacuse he did not think his team could qualify in his own state. Then go to Nationals and tie for 67th and play the same amount of games in front of no coachs because they won one game more then the 95th place teams.

NOTE: all names in the post have been changed to protect the people involved. The above has to be false because even the worst team in Cali is better then the best team any where else. ........................................At least thats what I have been told...On this board

Could you please point to where that was said on this board?

It's provably true (and really beyond argument) that California softball is stronger at the top, and much deeper overall than softball virtually anywhere else on the planet. There's nothing insulting about saying that, nor shameful in admitting it...it's simply a statistical fact. So it's entirely reasonable for a California team that isn't quite strong enough to qualify in-state (or perhaps is stong enough, but just didn't...they play the games for a reason) to believe that it has a chance of doing quite well at nationals. And history certainly validates this belief.

So a California team tied for 67th at nationals....what, pray tell, does that prove? That they shouldn't have tried? That no team that doesn't qualify in-state should try? The suggestion is absurd.
There is no charge for awesomeness

Isn't it just speculation to say that a Cali team would have done worse or better here or there, or that some other team would have done worse or better in their place? Who can really say who "deserves" to go here or there besides the system of qualifying that is already in place. If a team qualifies, no matter how they qualified, they "deserve" to go wherever they qualifed for.

I can understand how someone could get upset by out-of-state teams that "steal" berths from local teams that are on the bubble. There's a good remedy for that - outplay and beat the out-of-state team.

And I'm not from Cali, for those who don't know.

Okay, FP, I think we'll all concede that on some thread somewhere on HB, some knucklehead stated all CA teams are better than any teams from all other states, and therefore all CA teams should get berths to Nationals.

Note the operative word in that paragraph is knucklehead.

Anyone who would believe such nonsense, or try to make a point based on such nonsense, would, in turn, also be a knucklehead.

All very good points...

I did not take the post in this direction. In my original post I said California was the best. You people do not agree with that then they have not been to a Nationals, Colorado, Rising Star, etc....

If was not meant to be a unfriendly post. I was just commenting on a post prior to Nationals. I did not agree with that post. I do not agree with people saying; We do not have enough berths so we have to go out of state to go to nationals; then wait until Nationals and those teams that went out of state to get the berths will be in the Top 20.

I do not think more berths should be given to any State. Compete and win the berths that are available in your state ( except Gold). Someone said why should the AA not have the chance to go to Nationals. Well I say, Why cant the Mass. team get the chance to showcase their kids. I inderstand it a ASA rule, its just one that I do not agree with. I am not picking on the AA. It sounds like it, but I am not. They are a very good organization and have a winning history.

And you question about " point it out on the board"...................Just read any where on this board or any board...It is implied
