What is considered good OBP/Avg in Softball?

What's on your mind?

Fairly new to travel and dd moved up (actually, way up in age division) and I don't know if in softball over .300 (as in baseball) is good. If I remember correctly, reading in the local paper last Spring about HS teams, a lot of girls seemed to be in ranges from .500s to 700s. Just wondering how she is doing "statistically."

In my opinion over .300 for travel is good. Stats for high school are better because pitching and fielding is not as good, resulting in high averages for good hitters.

We are a mixed 14U team (2 - '94's and 11 '95's) and I just finished catching up on our fall game stats (23 games). Our top two girls are at .542/.585 (3rd in the order)and .528/.552 (4th in the order). 9 of our 13 girls are over .300, with our leadoff and #2 hiiter in the .400's for average, but I think that we are the recepient of sometimes less than quality pitching although we think of ourselves as an above average hiiting team, spending a lot of time on that part of the game. (Yes, we are in search of parity at our age classification, but what do you expect from the cold, cold upper Midwest? (34 degrees here last Saturday overnight))

Here in California where pitching may be a bit better, at least more teams with at least one good pitcher - IMO hitting over .300 is good, .400 is great. Kids batting .500 plus consistently is phenominal, but not all that uncommon - all depending on who you are playing... :?

"consistently over .500" - I agree - Who is keeping the scorebook (Mommy or Daddy).

I have seen .667 batting averages (not OBP) posted, yet clearly remember that "special someone" going 1 for 4 or 0 for 3 in many games during this time.

It became such an open item that some of the other girls were joking about it (upon ground out they would mutter “Oh, another hit”). Several parents started keeping their own set of books. It did provide a nice source of humor, especially during those long, hot summer tournaments.

I agree that realistically, if someone is on base every 1 out of 3 at bats, against top level competition, they are doing well. If you are facing “B” teams, this average should be over .500.

thedoanezone - sorry about your Cubs - just saw my CWS lose it all last night but never thought they'd get that far!

Thanks for all the replies. Puts it in perspective. We're keeping our own stats too. Question. DD had infield rocket hit to 3rd. She's very fast and looked like she was going to beat it out. But then 3rd makes throw one-hop in the dirt and 1st misses. Would you score that as a hit or not? I guess this is where it gets subjective?

Did I say she was really fast :) ? I see what you mean. Can't assume on what didn't actually occur.

Usually hard hit balls are the ones you can't beat out since the fielder received the ball so quickly.
Tough one but you can't assume what might have happened. Bottom line the throw was bad and 1B didn't field it.
I would score that as reached on error

I don't agree. If the throw would NOT have resulted in an out, it is a hit.
Example: Slapper bounces one to short, F6 kicks the ball with baserunner two feet from 1st base. Base hit.

You don't want to get to a point where the offensive player is rooting for the defense to make the damn play so they can have their hit.

However, in the example above, I don't see how the runner was going to beat it if it was a "rocket" to third. Doesn't add up.

I kept the book and compiled stats last year, and I admit I was generous with the hits. A batter reaching first on an error got a hit. This is at the 14U level where errors occur occasionally but are not as common as lower age levels. Was I wrong do do so?

My DD was app. .375/.635 last season in 14U. She knows how to draw a walk.
