I agree with Kat, the child is the one to say "hey coach, what do I need to work on more to make my game better in your eyes?" Our one DD was relegated to the Freshman team two years ago due to her being a freshman and they wouldn't have had enough to make a freshman team if she didn't. The coach told her he needed her there and she told him it wasn't a good enough answer. She played Freshman and almost all JV games that year and then as a sophomore was the varsity starter and is again this year and they are ranked 8th in the state last week. So even by her going to him and disagreeing, doing it in an "adult like" manner can go well and gain some respect for her.
they now have JV "A" and JV "B" to resolve that type issue
It's just one point of view...
