defending steal (after a walk) with a runner on 3rd

We have the catcher drill the batter in the helmet. It doesn't get anyone out but
it quickly becomes a deterrent to stealing.

You can also have F3 tackle the BR prior to reaching 1B....the umpire will call dead ball and give the BR the base she would have reached had the OBS not occurred...1B.

Best advice on this play is to ignore everything Sam said, just let the batter proceed to 2B, then walk the next batter to load the bases, and from there on go for the force out at home.

Girl leading off.. defender no where to be seen. F2 makes throw, girl dives back, ball drills girl in ribs. F3 there just in time to retrieve the ball.

That one had to hurt... and her lead was a lot smaller afterwards...

This weekend, our catcher caught a strike 3 on a batter and immediately zipped the ball to first to try to catch the runner who was on first off the bag....except that the batter who had just struck out was left handed, and was backing out of the box. So she got hit in the helmet from about 6 inches away (and this catcher has as good an arm as I have seen in 12U, and probably 14U and 16U too), and the ball ricocheted (is that how you spell that?) off her head and over the first base dugout out of play.

Thankfully the umps didn't know the rule so the runner on first didn't get to advance, like I think she should have

I know that's not the scenario mentioned, but hitting the batter in back of the head made me think about it

I actually meant pegging the one in the batters box. My idiot catcher doesn't have the arm
or the reflexes to "deter" a runner way over at 3rd base.

Okay, so seriously, do everything Sam said, to the letter. And it's usually a good idea to let your defense know what play you want before ball four.

Here is what we do. On the BB, catcher fires the ball back to pitcher. Pitcher knows instantly on BB to take steps back of rubber in order to not trip over it but also to see the field. The 2b moves into the baseline halfway between 1st and 2nd. The SS takes the bag. 1st base now watches runner. If the runner continues in a path toward 2nd. 1st baseman yells runner. Pitcher looks 3rd then throws 2b who should be able to catch the ball and quick tag before the runner from 3rd can move. If the pitcher makes any motion at runner at 3b, 2b moves out of basepath AND the pitcher knows now that ball is to ss. WE DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO THROW TO SS! We won't give that bag up without trying some type of defense. I'd guess we threw out 6-8 girls like this last year and didn't give up a run.
