Who Does Not Have Hotel Rooms In Midland

What's on your mind?

by 3Bsnag » Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:47 pm

$ is why Midland got it? Ugh.

I didn't even think about you poor people who have to fly in. I can't imagine the fare difference for flying into Midland vs DFW. Is it enough to brave the 4 1/2 hr drive?

Can't wait until after Midland to see all the post on this tournament. You all outsiders, ie Cali., Ga., Tn., are in for a shock. My two cents

Have you ever noticed how the parts of the world that have oil under them - all kind of suck. Well, Midland is not quite that nice.

Be glad that you did not book Motel6 or Studio6 (run by the same company). Read the reviews on the Odessa hotels. Or Midland. Scary.

If there is ANY good news, it is that some teams booked blocks of rooms prior to metros. If, and it's a big if)... if they didn't make it and don't backdoor through a second chance then they will release the rooms. The problem is that you don't know if or when that will happen.

And... how about this... jump on Travelocity or Orbitz or ???? and book a flight for your team into Midland/Odessa. Check the seat availability. Now, if you want to play with a pitcher, catcher, deep short and second, no parents, no coaches... you might find enough seats. For one or two teams.

I believe it would be smart of ASA to add something to their website specifically related to this tournament, noting available hotels, air and ground transportation, etc.. If teams can't get there (hint; no sane person is going to drive to Midland from North Carolina, California, Illinois, Washington...) then things are going to get tenuous. Reminder, you need to check in by 5:00PM Saturday. In theory. Apparently they are already hedging and will allow (so the rumor goes) Sunday check-in because teams can't get there. REALLY !!! ASA needs to be very open, very information intensive and helpful. They placed this tournament in an area that is an issue and they need to be part of the process to make it successful.

It's time for ASA to step up to the plate.

Thanks for the nice picture DonnieS... Always something to look forward to... That is if we ever get there and are not sleeping in a car at the field.

Good news, kinda like finding gas for $4.35/gal, kinda bitter sweet... Most hotels are already filling Waiting Lists, but talking to one of the hotels, people have until the day before check in to cancel, so that would not help at all. I even called the Midland Visitor's Bureau # listed in the tournament packet if you cannot find rooms. Nice enough guy answered, apologized, and said there is nothing they can do. Also recommended to book 2-3 rooms at each hotel and just be glad you are there... Probably would not mind if we were in an area with other things to do or see, but from what I am hearing, Midland sounds like the opening scenes from the movie "The Rookie".

My comment was in response to the "leave it to Texas" statement.....

I have already emailed to the ASA Headquarters to file an official complaint regarding the practice of allowing just one cooler per team in a tournament that will have temperatures easily breaking the 100 degree mark.

In that email I also stated that Midland is completely ill prepared as a City to host a tournament of this magnatude. Hotel accomidations / Hotels proxicimity to the fields (both of which were a problem last year during ASA HOF Qualifier) is just the biggest of several problems.

I am just tired of the California smugness...

Believe me - I would MUCH rather be attending ASA Nationals in Johnson City, Phoenix, SLC, Dallas, Houston, Moline or Roseville (as long as the Cali umps stay home..... j/k).

Oh well... another 8-9 hour car ride is right around the corner... guess I will just suck it up and make the best of it.

If I see any of you there - introduce yourself to me and we can go find the TD and complain together.... then we can sneak out to my truck and drink a beer or two.... for you Californians - I will have a box of the finest wine on ice as well - you bring the glasses!!!

Just make sure you bing a truck load of cow shit so I could put on my cowboy boots, while drinking my wine and feeling that BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN moment. Now that is what I would call TEXAS hospitality.

Current Midland/Odessa over-under on number of teams that actually attends is 60. Expecting a miserable turnout, so my inside source at the Chamber tells me. The whole city is bracing for an embarrassment.

Just wait. What you will find is some of the nicest people in the world there - and a lot of churches (please God, get me out of here) makes good sense.
