Midland/Odessa TX Tour Guide

What's on your mind?

by honcho55 » Thu Aug 07, 2008 6:24 am

I too give a big thumbs up to the troopers(let me off w/ a warning doing 80 in a 65 while running late to pick wife up at airport. To the Fresno Force folks who combined with us to turn a vacant parking lot into a grilling extravaganza complete with girls from at least parts of 3 teams having a dance party. But possibly the greatest sight of all was the Dad dance off between Fresno and Texas Fusion. For one night anyway, we forgot we were in Midland and could have been anywhere in the world. Great memories and hope we get the opportunity to experience Nationals again. Also a shout out to the SoCal Jets for answering any questions this newbie had and showing us the meaning of team and parents working toward one goal. Hope to see ya'll soon. But please let's make it somewhere else other than Midland!!! :ugeek:

BTW, according to Wikipedia, my spelling is also correct. But for purposes of unity, I will defer to the lady who is from the South. ;)

I would like to second what honcho55 said in his post. One thing ya'll must know, don't ever get into a dance off with honcho, he will put u to shame. We be from Texas and one thing I learned is that Cali. is tops in softball. I do know that our girls are more motivated than ever to get back to nationals and compete with the Cali. girls. They saw what dedication is all about and alot of our girls are already working hard for next year. Thanks to all for the great time.

ok... I have a couple Midland/Odessa foodie "things" to contribute;

Biscuits and gravy. Everywhere.

Onion rings by the pound. If you know the phrase "Lord of the Onion Rings"... then you know where... and you know why.

Fast food... everywhere.

Biscuits and gravy.

A fresh strawberry? Not going to happen. Premolded at Albertsons.

Meat, meat and more meat.

Biscuits and gravy.

Hint on restaurants; if there are two horse trailers parked in the lot, loaded, eat there. The food is good, the people are pleasant, friendly and polite. Like it outta be...

Eggs are a staple along with sausage. After you have some eggs, have some bacon. Oh yea. Lots of bacon. Sausage. Pour some country gravy over that. Top it off with some pancakes... lots of real butter. No problem. "Healthy" eating left and right coasters will leave quite assured they will die on the flight out as they chain dial their cardiologist for an immediate appointment.

Service everywhere is, compared to most regions of earth, s-l-o-w. It's a different pace so having an 45-60 minute wait after ordering food is not atypical. The oil companies are booming and if you're at the lower end of the employment scale, service/food is now your forte at 1/2 the salary the oil companies pay for someone who is breathing and vertical.

If it's warm, above the ambient 105 degrees, there is a 98.17% chance it is fried.

Pasta centric restaurants are great for players who exercise and burn off calories. Pasta loads for accompanying parents will be dealt with over the next 2 months as everyone tries to lose 7 pounds.

And... there yah go... you're welcome... did I mention biscuits and gravy ?????

It has been 4 years since my DD was in 14's and in Midland. How about the bugs, 2 inch black bugs in the am at the fields? Still there? The best rest. in town then was "The Bar". Downtown midland. Actualy a hole in the wall with great food, daytime, family ok. Nothing has changed!
