Coach vs. Team name

What's on your mind?

We handed out Bazooka bubble gum after every game, girls loved it!

This was (of course) an 8U rec team. :D

We did that for commie kickball many year ago. Same thing, handed out the bazooka bubble gum after each game. Actually, looking back, it was in 2001, same year as 9/11. That weekened we said a prayer before the game and handed out flags for all of the fallen brothers and sisters.

Back to the original post: If DD's goals are to play college ball then organizations/coachs names should be a determining factor. Established organizations have marketed themselves and their program to college recruiters for just this reason. This does not always mean that they have winning seasons every year but it does mean that they have managed to pull out enough wins that they have gained the attention of the college world. Coach's should be a factor! If DD is planning to play at the college level she is going to need a coach who can make the calls on the field and provide the leadership for the team.

Yes most players looking at playing after high school will have pitching or hitting coachs. But the teams head coach is the one on the field who will determine when and how to use those abilities.

I have had 2 DD's in the softball arena for the last 14 years and can say without a doubt that the organizations reputation and the coachs abilities have been determining factors in where they have played. We have always left the choices up to the girls because they are the ones playing. Fortunately they have gravitated towards those coachs who "know what they are doing" and organizations who can help them get to the college level.

If you are playing rec ball or are there just for the fun of it, choose a team with your friends, play for your next door neighbor, or choose a team because of the colors and team name. Whatever your decision, have fun and enjoy your game!

There are times when I think the right answer to this is a mix.

I would never have my DD go play for a team simply because it has a famous name, but the org she is currently with has a name that is both successful in NorCal and is also associated with a fair number of college recruiters and thus has the liaisons to a higher level of ball. They also have the connections for the showcase-type tourneys as she gets older, whereas our former team, regardless of coaching had -ZERO- connections or name and would not have the effectiveness as the girls progress and need the help as they look toward colleges...
Being from NorCal, what do I know anyway???

My DD was recommended to a new team by her pitching coach. She wanted to get into that organization but weren't sure about the move until we met and talked with the coaches. After a practice and some discussions with the new coaches we took a chance. Everything seems to be what we were looking for so for now here we go!
