Radar Guns

Donnie, what if your daughter never throws in the 60's? Are we going to keep pulling out the radar gun to verify that? At 16 yrs. old, my DD threw one at 62 mph with a 30 mph wind behind her. That's when we decided that she would have to accept the fact that 57-59mph was her optimal speed without over-throwing. We put the radar gun away and she did just fine... working the corners and with a great change-up.

Now, if yours is the next Lisa or Cat, then by all means go ahead and buy your radar gun(s), but get the $$$ one that works. The glove model (2 in 6 years) we owned was off by 2-6 mph when compared to the many hand-held (gun) models. Of course, we probably bought the one that Lisa wasn't endorsing.

I have used the glove radar through 2 coaching stints at small colleges, boys LL, ASA, HS, etc. over the past 15 years. I am only on my second one. It never leaves my glove.

I never seriously clocked my own DD. She did not want to play college ball. The glove radar showed her at 54 in HS, which had to be pretty close to accurate.

One of my 11 YO students tops out at 43, her 9 YO sister can hit 30 occasionally. We celebrate and I let her pick a new hair scrunchy, when she does.

Like Donnie says (and I can't say it so eloquently) the glove radar is only a tool for measurement and encouragement.

If you want to get an accurate reading on your DD, occasionally take her to an indoor batting cage where they will do that for $22.00 (half an hour of cage work.)

By the way, I thought that my glove radar had died, too. I took it to Batteries Plus and they replaced the battery. It is good as new.

You dont have to if its on your glove. I just wait till the kid turns around, then I glance at it, and we do it again. I checked it against the bushnell radar, the $200 model and it was close, sometimes when checking them against each other, they would be dead on, though again, the glove radar was just easier to use. Like I said before, its a relative measurement, only to her.

Lisa never endorsed the glove radar, her words were something along the line of getting instant feedback, I told her about the glove radar and she said that sounded fine. Your comments about being concerned about her getting a cut of the deal says a lot.

Conversations here about these kind of things are important to help people find ways to improve what they are doing. Blind comments - This sucks or that sucks - are not helpful. Just a wild guess, but Amy, myself and the kid you are jealous of, are not the only ones using the glove radar.

I've always been told that the Jugs gun is most reliable. It's certainly very expensive. The Bushnell is a lot cheaper and it seems to read 3-5 mph slower than the Jugs, but who knows, maybe it's the accurate one.

I have the Bushnell, works great and when I compared to the Jugs was exactly the same readings. You just have to be careful that you don't stand behind the batter. It will pick up the bat speed and not the ball.

Guys, come on who really cares which ones are better! If DD pitches 45 or 65 if she cant hit the spots, speed makes absolutely no difference. Why would any body want to clock speed..........you really need wake up!

I had a Bushnell and have a Juggs.

I got a great deal on a slightly used Juggs, and would not have paid retail for it. But it's a great unit.

I found the Juggs to be a better, more consistent unit. The Bushnell would give a reading within 1 mph of the Juggs, if it did not give a no reading or a completely bogus reading, which was about 205 of the time.

Guess you get what you pay for. Consider carefully what you needs really are. The Bushnell would have continued to meet my needs as a bucket dad and coach, had down and in on a called outside corner not got away and hit the bucket and destroyed the Bushnell in the bucket. I never put the Juggs gun in the bucket (but I know an interesting story about a service weapon in a bucket at Western Nat'ls).
