High School Ball

What's on your mind?

by Cannonball » Fri Feb 01, 2008 9:14 am

With HS tryouts coming up, there are several website etc. that have tryout tips for your child. Unfortunately, there are few for the parents. :o ;) In our pre-tryout meeting, I give a handout to the prospective players outlining the procedure, some guideline and a letter to the parents. I might take a couple of ideas from that handout and mention them here. Parents need to realize that any anxiety that they might have COULD affect their child. In short, control the things you can control and do your best to make those days of tryouts like any other day. Secondly, during tryouts it is easier on the player if you talk to them on their terms. Many will feel that they didn't do well. For some this will be truthful. For others, they are harder on themselves than they should be. Your child doesn't need coaching or admonishments at this time. Rather, they need parental support.

Having suggested this, and again, it is from our perspective and what we hand out in a community where we've lived most of our lives and have coached for several years, I do think the advice is sound. Per what all of the parents "say." Most coaching staffs worth their salt are not sharing anything with any parent at anytime during tryouts. JMHO!

Geez, Donnie,
I wasnt aware that the eteamz grammer police had joined Heybucket. I started to get a severe case of the Red Ass, but then I realized that people that point out mistakes of others have an overwhelming sense of inadaquacy.

Very true - my inadaquacy is legendary - but the fact is I am trying to read your comment, and its well thought out but it takes too long to figure out what you are saying. But just to make you feel worse, you are being fussed at about your grammar by a texan.

Hey, if you need help, ax somebody.

For God's sake, Lannie, learn spelling and 2nd grade grammar. What you say is correct but people are not going to take you serious when you sound like you come out of the inter city hood.

Regarding complaining about the school coaches and how high school sports are run, keep this in mind. In the cases I know about personally, the college coaches interested in a player asked to speak to the travel coaches and the high school coaches. Lannie said she said nothing when other parents starting calling - the right thing to do. These other parents when they realised that her kid was being handled differently and you can damn well bet her kid is talented, would have caused more trouble. The h/s coach there will remember that when the coaches/recruiters come calling.

If you and your daughter are who I think you are, I would love to hear your daughter's reasoning.
Arguably the best Softball player in the Marmonte League, and she doesn't even play HS SB. Pretty funny. At least she is running track. Another area Softball girl is doing the same thing at another school.

In 9th grade we allowed her to transfer schools because of academic concerns she had. After the transfer she was not eligible for varsity sports since she had been at her "home school" more than 15 days (she was there two months). She would not consider JV softball so instead ran JV track where you still get the same coaching as the varsity.

Apparently track has a wonderful social atmosphere (who knew?) and she really enjoys it. Her mother (works at the school) and other school officials have occasionally tried to prod her over to the softball team but so far, she isn't having it. If she's happy I'm happy and have stayed out of it.

I hope that sheds some light on it for you.

Donnie, good point!!! With the girl that has left our program because she feels she is at the Varsity level, if the schools start calling the HS coach, I'm sure she will not have to many nice things to say. "She quits when she doesn't get what she wants."

If they don't talk to the coach but to the parents/player or the Travel coach, converstaion could be, "Why didn't you play HS Ball after Freshman year?". Response, "Well she just didn't realize what a great player I was and put other girls on Varsity before me."

That will work well.

She is not arguably the best softball player in the Marmonte League.....She IS the best player in the Marmonte League....she has learned more about running and improved her running....all the while, she has not been adversely effected by crappy high school softball coaches. When HS season is over, she doesn't have to spend a month correcting all the stupid stuff her HS coach wanted her to do.
