Although My DDs have had some great moments it's the funny ones from their first year that stick out in my mind the most. My kids are still young so this was only a few years ago.
We were a rec team and gawd awful as both players and coaches. Our first mistake was to let the kids vote for a team name rather than pick one for them. As a bunch of mostly 1st graders they came up with some kind of Barbie/Teddy Bear/kitten hybrid nickname that inevitably drew laughs from opposing teams at games (mostly directed at us coaches who wore matching jerseys).
It was coach pitch and I was nominated to pitch to our team. I viewed my role as primarily to alleviate the fear I saw in the kids eyes as much as possible before I pitched to them and get the ball to somehow defy the laws of physics by levitating over home plate as if on an invisible tee. We were actually in a competative game with runners on first and second when one of my kids who hadn't gotten a hit all year steps to the plate. Much to my surprise she hits a hard grounder that the third baseman bobbles and by the time she recovers our runner had made it safely to third. I looked to second to see that the other runner was safely at second but as I followed the path to first I saw nobody there. I followed the path down the baseline to home plate and saw nobody there either. I looked to our dugout in puzzlement only to see the girl neatly putting her bat on the bat rack. Obviously, she remembered her mothers instructions to put her toys away after playing with them but forgot our coaching instructions to run to first base after hitting the ball.
I yelled at her to not worry about the bat and run to first after hitting the ball, remembering to call her "honey" at the end so as to not make a 6 yr old cry after getting her first career hit. She was safe at first but we still lost the game.
