Hopefully we won't get a coach like the catching coach you described......ouch.

Twasn't a catching coach but the Head Coach ( no pun intended ) ... who instructed the new catcher as to the mechanic of proper mitt placement and angle ... when the pitcher requested a target to be better able to work the plate, she was told to just throw it down the middle ... when she asked for a target for that, she was told to just pitch the ball ( this was not BP it was pitching/catching/fielding practice ) ...
My goal for the year is to unlock the mysteries of the HS bunt ... I plan on perching on the top seat of the bleachers, camera held firmly in my talons like an un-bald eagle ready to strike wounded prey ... and when the moment is right, and bases are loaded, #4 hitter is up,2 outs, down by 3 runs bottom of the 7th ... I will learn the ways of the HS Coach who has this lack of speedster lay one down for the first time since she was 8 ... the possibilities are endless ...

I feel your pain. I don't know if you remember some of my old posts, but I was a bit smug - our Varsity coach was pretty good, didn't take bull from parents, and was good to my kids. His backup, the JV coach, who was also pretty good, knows a bit about softball and the kids loved him. He is a grandpa to one of the varsity kids and coached hitting and pitching around town often for free. Well....things change fast. The Varsity coach got sick and has dropped out. The AD told the JV coach he was too old to coach varsity - the kids were all pretty upset. They are interviewing for a new Varsity coach. Hopefully it will be the former D1 all american and travel softball coach who applied (please, please). If not...I could have some good stories this year too....

Understand your plight.....however, I doubt very much if the AD told the JV coach he was 'too old." That's an age discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen. The AD may feel that inside, but I bet he used some other excuse. If not, I've got a lawyer the JV coach should talk with.

I've often slammed HS Coach's on here because of our own bad experiences, and would like to take this opportunity to apologize ... sometimes I think that I know everything ... I'm really pig headed and my pride and temper get in the way of my better judgement ... My goal for the future is to be more open minded and accepting of some of the revolutionary strategies, tactics and ideas that I see which I am unfamiliar with and learn from them to better improve my own Coaching skills ... In 2009 I will strive to keep my mouth shut as usual, eyes open and my camera at the ready ...

My situation has dictated the exact opposite as a result of behavior that borders on that of a demigod.

HS Coaches have their problems but I thought I would throw in our TB coach experience last year.

In Colorado - DD is a pitcher - Coaches daughter having trouble pitching - coach is majorly pissed - My DD has not warmed up - told not to - middle of inning coach calls time out and puts my DD in to pitch. He is so pissed about the game he cuts short her 10 pitch warm up and says just start the game.

He did this 3 times in a week to my DD (not quite as dramatic as that but still no pre game warm ups). Needless to say we are not with that team this year.

There are gems everywhere.

... And when Coach Guru orders new uni's which have pretty cool jersey tops ... I will resist saying anything about the white pants ... and look at the positives, such as gals learning to time their periods better and being able to 'suck it up' when they go hard into second and have a gush ...

Mondays lesson : When you are down 25-0 in the 7th inning ... You send your team out for the 8th ...

Tuesdays Lesson:
When you are a Coach, after your backstop asks if she can leave her catchers gear in the equipt. room instead of carrying it back and forth to her car every day ... You tell her " No, leave it at home , you won't need it this year ... " So she does ... & you don't give her 1 practice behind the dish ... practicing her only at 3rd ... then, after a 1 scrimmage loss of 25-2 loss in 8 innings and yesterdays 1 broken pinky toe later ... you insert her in a practice behind the dish with the HS Equipt. and a beat up rag of a mitt ... ( because you told her to leave hers home, remember ? nope ) ., Yell at her for not having her equipt. & scream at her when she misses a throw down ... tell her a broken toe can't hurt that much or she wouldn't be out here ... then spring an after practice meeting on them with no notice so they miss a study group and project group assignment ... hhmmmm Student Athlete or Athlete Student .... I'm not sure ... but if I follow these few guidelines , I think I could be Teacher, Coach and Motivator of the year ...

Wednesdays Lesson:
After tonites game, when I questioned DD as to why, that on two separate plays, with a runner on first with less than 2 outs, when balls were hit sharply to her at F5, she threw to F3 for the out instead of getting the lead runner with F4 covering second ... and I was informed that the Coach refers to that as an " All Star Play " and that you should " do that only when you want to show off on your travel team, but not here " ...

* note to self : bite tongue, keep score, stop at store for 12 pack ...
