how do you know who is right about swinging a bat

What's on your mind?

Can I play?

Can someone critique my kid's (Samantha Pappas) swing? She's done playing except she just got picked up to play in a slo-pitch league, so fire away and don't hold back. She did ok in college so if flaws are pointed out it seems like it would demonstrate you don't HAVE to have a near perfect swing to compete at the college level.

BTW, I know nothing about hitting but I thought Ceo had crazy bat control. The clip a couple above my kid shows her hitting away rather than slapping/bunting. Curious what people think of that swing given that she typically didn't try to crush the ball.
10 years from now I'll wish I felt like I do these days.

If she's playing in a co-ed league I imagine there a lot of embarrassed men in the league when they realize she can hit the ball harder, further and more consistently than they ever will.

Find the guy who taught Hunter Pence how to swing a baseball bat (and run and catch). He's having lunch with the guy who taught Jim Furyk how to swing a golf club. Net/net, you get the basics and then do what works best for you.

I do appreciate the science of great mechanical hitting. Making the most of math.
We have all seen the girl who muscles a HR. I for one am always impressed with the one who makes it look effortless.
Optimum contact point with balance and some confidence.
A hitting coach is to teach the batter. And it's the player's job to practice what is taught.
Hitting coaches very, some are soft, some are tough, some explain things well, some can not and still expect results.
Mark, excuse me for putting you on the spot with an old practice clip. There is not enough information to analyze correctly.
I was just seeing if the bus still cleared her. No need to call the big truck of crap to dump. (unless it's fun)
I do enjoy an honest break down of what can always be improved, or tweaked. It may surprise some people of what can be pointed out in improvements.
I am sure no one who has a dd deep in TB would make such a post to have it picked apart on an open forum.
This does allow them to view, and learn a few things.
The cell phone video has come a long way in a very short amount of time. They are great for games, but a valuable tool at practice, if used correctly.

Jonriv. about your dd and the video........
I thought she was smart??? Well I hate to tell you this,,,,,,it's time for a talk.
If she was smart she would move that net out of the way, she will find that the ball travels further without it being there.
And let her know, if you hit the ball were the other team is not,,the ball travels further.
I giving you best best help I am capable of. (she's awesome)

Squirrel, ,,,I have some bad news about your dd.
The 'O' on her helmet,,,,it stands for something else.
She is back in the box, which means she is leading from behind.
She took away that catcher's ball which she earned by calling that pitch. Your dd redistributed to the people outside the fence that didn't pay to get in.
I see she is also left,,,,,just saying, if she walks like a duck.

In regard to practicing on an open field, and thinking out of the box. Tee ball golf.
I have no video of this fun, but she would get a friend, I would take them to a golf course.
We would get a cart, they would drive,(12u-16u) I could never follow rules.
Play the game golf with a tee, a softball and bat. All they had to do was get the ball on the green.
Just an offering of how to make it fun while getting them to grow and improve on their swing.
Of course they are having more fun driving the cart than driving the ball. They just don't know what they are gaining.
Golfers have a driving range.
Shooters have a shooting range.
Why would you cage a batter?

She would be high on my list of kids to watch in games were I a college coach and she an available recruit.

That is very nice of you, thank you. Was looking for more of break down critique, there is always things to improve on.
I have heard of coaches giving multiple lessons at the same time, I have also heard of coaches giving lessons while on the phone with other business.
Was hoping this would be the first web based lesson. A Heybucket first. ;)
It does show what an open field and cell phone offers.
Note all went center/right. I know there must have been an outside pitch in there.

OK. It's a little frustrating to break down a swing on video I can't look at frame by frame but I'll have a go. It's a very good swing. Looking at the first swing, if I had a front or back view maybe I could find something to whine about like maybe the lead arm is a little below the swing plane but I might not. It's just good. My worry if I was a college coach would be what does she look like on something at the knees. Not many kids have a swing this good. From the group this good on high pitches a minority are still impressive when you see them swing on a strike at the bottom of the zone. Surely the world class bp pitcher can give us something at the knees? :)

For me, swinging a bat is a geometry, biomechanics and physics question. This hitter reduces all that to an elegant very simple form. I'll ask my mentor what he sees since you asked. He's a harder grader than me. I see the positive because I know what I'd expect this kid to do in college and what her competition for college spots looks like on average. He sees only the inefficiencies as he compares a swing to the best in the world.

Just load the youtube link in the website below and you will get frame by frame. Plus a number of other speed controls. Makes going through youtube hitting videos easy.

Thanks for the kind words. I have to agree with you about the cage. Fortunately we had a real big yard(more like a field). Never had a batting cage so even after we got a pitching machine all of her hitting work with me was in an open field. Her younger brother got practice shagging flies. She has always(and still does) finds cage and tunnel work frustrating. I like the open field because you can see where the good and bad hits go. As we all know, not all good hits are up the middle.

Have always used video, despite my terrible videotaping skills. Would just show my daughter both good and bad at bats. Used the QuickTime manual scroll to do ad hoc slo mo

I think it would be great if more people posted some of their drills- there are some great ideas out there
