It's just you.

Maybe so, but it is not called "verbal" for nothing.

Look I completely agree that if a school makes a verbal agreement with a player (junior or Senior in Highschool) then that school should honor the "verbal" contract. If the school does not, then bad school and we should know who the school is.

The truth of the matter is - if a school really wants a player, they will enter into a written contract, then there is no "pulling back".

IMO - if a school is not in a written contract with a player and a better player comes along then the school SHOULD sign the better player. If the school does anything other than that, they are not trying to field the best team possible.

It's called a verbal because softball players can not SIGN until November of their senior year.

The rest of your post tells me you've never been through or anywhere near the recruiting process in softball

Thank you for the great information!

You are correct that DD isn't in the recruiting process but she will be in the near future.

Posts like yours make my job as her finance company soooooo much easier!

Glad I could help

A verbal is a verbal.Too bad for the athlete. In the best interest of all softball players, the school should be outed for not following thru with their side of the "bargain".This should preclude that school from doing this to others. The pressure is on these kids to verbal early, applied by the schools themselves. You cant compare this to football, where "bluechip" players change their mind every week. So,if "South Central Louisiana State" doesnt follow thru with their verbals no one would verbal to them or should. That's the way it should work.JMO

All I can say is that we played against this kid last fall and (IMHO) she is the real deal. I haven't seen her since she's returned from rehab. so I can't comment on if she's lost anything. The younglady they recruited in her place must be a true stud. I don't believe this younglady will have any problem being picked by another school it will just depend on how much money they have to offer for 2010. I just hope one of the teams in the Big West pick her up.

It will be interesting to see if this has a domino affect.

These problems with verbals 2 years before graduation are pretty predictable. The question is how bad will things get WRT verbals that don't end up with the kid actually playing for that school? How many kids will end up going to a different school before the coaches agree to stop making the offers? Just what the recruiting process needed: More uncertainty for a longer period of time. Will contingency planning become part of the process? To what extent?

The pulling of verbals by colleges and players changing verbals to colleges is starting to happen more frequently. It is still not common, but it is having a chilling affect on softball recruiting.

Also, some colleges are going after players that have already verbal to another college. At 16U nationals, A top D1 25 college coach was really upset when she found out a PAC10 school convinced a verbal player to change her verbal. Coach went off for 15 minutes how recruiting is changing and softball is going down the wrong road on verbals.

Whether we like it or not, colleges and players changing their minds is going to occur more often in the future.

For those interested, I believe the school being discussed is Cal State Fullerton.

Well, it's finally happening in softball....happens in mens football, basketball, and baseball all the time. This is the tip of the iceberg, folks. Softball coaches are getting fired if they don't win now....and they will change their minds on verbals...because their job now depends on them making the right decisions about recruitment. It will be interesting when the girls who have verballed start signing with other schools.....that is the next logical step.
