Latest info says expect to see in the neighborhood of 20 "local" teams receive berths to "fill out" the tournament in an attempt to give it a more national-size feel. They expect no more than 60 real teams. Also, latest report says don't expect to see the typical vendors you have seen in the past at ASA national tournaments. Since the tournament can't guarantee the typical 100 teams, vendors are threatening to pull out because they can't justify their expenses. From what I hear, the Chamber is PISSED OFF because of the inevitable black eye.

20 Local teams? I've seen their talent and they maybe hce 1-2 descent teams. Hopefully they expand the "local" teams to Houston or DFW areas.

This will be our first year attending any kind of a ASA National Event. We have had problems from the start. Crappy info, no decent website, a staff that to this date hasnt returned a phone call or email yet. ( going on 24 days in a row that i have left messages) There nice & polite but not helpful at all..... Would much rather talk to a complete jerk with information than these people. One team cooler per team in 100+ weather??? What the hell are these people thinking.....Raise the dam entry fee, charge a entry fee for coolers or something but jeopardizing the girls health just to make a few xtra bucks is stupid... I have even heard rumors that no tailgating will be allowed in the parking lot...And now we hear that teams might not be attending & Vender's are backing out??? Some national tournament this sounds like...

I know this will not set well with the hardcore ASA fans but i fear this will be our first & last year attending a ASA National... Panama City Beach has been great the past few years. Good competition, friendly KNOWLEDGEABLE staff, something to do on off days or when your knocked out, adequate hotel rooms, major airport & GOOD SCENERY on the beaches....
Why would anyone travel 1500+ miles & spend thousand to suffer threw the ASA experience like this years 14u sounds like it will be???

It is likely the "fill in" teams will be from Dallas, Houston, Austin etc.. There are a few teams in west Texas that may get invited. Most of the fill in teams at the HOF Qualifier last year were "local" west Texas teams that were quickly eliminated.

Our team went to Roseville from Texas last year. It was a very expensive trip. However, the Sacramento/Roseville area was very nice--good hotels, restaurants, parks etc.. Personally, I would not want to spend the money to travel to Midland. The only reason why we are going is that Midland is a "short" 8 hour drive from Houston.

It is going to be hot, miserable and the motels will be few and substandard. The fields themselves are not bad. Unless I felt I had a good shot to win it all, I would probably opt to save the travel costs.

You know it's bad when Texas is even disgusted with an ASA being held in our own state. I've been to Midland twice for tournaments and the fields were nice but the area..... ugh!

I am surprised NOT to hear from the Socal weenies that all the "very, very good" teams reside in LALA. And they wouldn't go as a "fill in" as it might damage their well honed, highly marketed reputation, therefore, any other team is (by definition) chopped liver.

It is nice to get info from those who have already played in Midland (and are intentionally... going back). Other than on-line hotel reviews and issues with a lack of communication, most of the comments have been very subjective, third party, rumor, etc... But more will be revealed in the next week and it gets closer to pucker-time. The water thing, though, is moronic.

Transportation to Midland, specifically, last flight hop in is becoming a major issue. In a perfect world they would have hired 10 high quality tour buses (nice ones), and set them up at DFW for 1-2 days for a shuttle service to Midland, doing return trips as well as the tourney concludes It's a ride, for sure, but at least there would be a concrete, fairly simple way of getting there if you are coming in from 1000 miles away or more.

It's going to be what you make it. If you're going to ASA "A" Nationals for anything other than what happens between the lines, then you should choose one of the more vacation friendly "world series". Pay your fee, don't have to earn it, kick up some sand on the beach, and play a little softball in between dips in the pool.

This one is about the competition...getting to see where you stack up against the very best in the country....period. Who cares what the place is like as long as the softball is good. Throw some bases down and lets get it on. Bring the febreeze, air fresheners, lyesol, tilex, clean sheets, own pillows, etc with you. (Nothing can be as bad as the University Plaza in Bloomington, IN). If you waited until June to get hotels, you were not going to get a good choice no matter which Nationals you're attending.

Don't forget as nice as Roseville, CA was last year, there were only 64 teams there, hotels were expensive, and it was not cheap to fly into. And it was 100 degree hot...albeit without the humidity.

And no...I'm not from Texas.
