Long story short, we had three girls that live in Vegas and tried out for the Minors Gold 12U team last fall. They all were invited to stay, but could not make it work just yet since it is 300 miles away. So they played on the best Vegas team through the fall and into the spring with intentions of making it work this year. Once the Vegas team decided they were not going to play ASA state because ASA in Nevada is very scarce at the 12U level (turned out there wasn't even a 12U A ball state tournament) we looked into playing with Minors at their state and into nats. I read the code and Minors coach read the code and we both thought that it wasn't going to be possible since we were rostered originally in Nevada. We decided to talk to the ASA officials before we gave up completely. A couple of weeks go by and Minors coach hears from the ASA official that we can still play nats as pickup players as long as we jump through a few hoops and sign up for a socal summer league and play at least one game. We did this, everything they said to a T, spent over $3000 (not including nationals costs....I'll get to that). A couple of days before we are set to go and have bought team pins, hotel reservations, non refundable flights, van rental, etc. etc. etc. Minors coach calls the ASA official asking for the pickup player form that she needs to complete the roster (we have aleady added them to the VTD and everything they asked) and he tells her that we can't be pickup players because we originally registered in Nevada. He went on to say that it didn't matter if we had moved to SoCal mid-season we still couldn't play in the SoCal ASA association because we played first in Nevada. He would not even let her plead her case. He kept cutting her off with "the code is the code" "not my problem" and "we are just volunteers, so you should know the code better than us" and actually laughed at her when she tried to explain how hard it would be to tell these three 13 yearold girls they had worked their tails off for nothing and wouldn't be allowed to go to nats after she had an email from ASA saying they could. I know that all three girls were heart broken. Thats what bugs me more than anything with this because it is all about the kids and obviously ASA has forgotten why they "volunteer". This is what needs to stop. Is there really something wrong with three girls that don't have an oppertunity to go to championship play being pickup players on a team from a state that actually has such a thing?

It really looks like the representative from So Cal that gave you the original information on making these girls eligible screwed up badly. I'm have some knowledge of the Code, and what this person suggested to your manager was completely wrong. Your wrath should be aimed at this person and perhaps this should serve as a notice to everyone that when dealing with these types of issues, get it in writing.

Concerning the other team with an out-of-state player on their team, if she was originally rostered on the team, it is not a problem. You can not "pickup" a player from out of state.

We got it in an email....same as in writing now days. You are right about who screwed up, I am still upset with how the person above them handled it with no regard to the intent of ASA softball and effect to these girls. Lets face it, if little girls didn't want to play softball at a higher level, there would be no ASA. Its all about the kids. This man has lost sight of that and thinks of it as a business only.
