For those falling in that category, here is a basic tutorial on the subject:
"Caps" refers to capital letters, and sometimes more specifically to the button on your keyboard that "locks" each of your keys so that every letter you type is capitalized. Capital letters are typically used in the first letter of the first word of each sentence, in the first letter of a name, in acronyms, in titles, etc. They are
not used in every letter of every word in every sentence.
So for instance, ABCDEFG are all capital letters, whereas abcdefg are lower case letters. And "TURN YOUR F'ING CAPS OFF" is all caps, whereas "turn your f'ing caps off" is all lower case.
Now on forums such as this one, using all caps (remember, that stands for "capital letters") is deemed the equivalent of shouting. So is the use of
bold font,
larger-than-normal font, and, to a certain extent, the use of
non-standard colors.
So, to illustrate, if one were extremely serious about something and really wanted to get one's point across (i.e., "shout"), one might write something like this:
TURN YOUR F'ING CAPS OFF!!!!But otherwise one should turn one's f'ing caps off.
