how do you know who is right about swinging a bat

What's on your mind?

I have read your writings at least eight times, my dd is on her third, she got lost, so I sent her the Heybucket link for easier reading. It is like a engineers physics class, it doesn't matter where the ball went, the break down of the swing and the getting the most out of energy in the most efficient manor is the science.
I feel that I owe you for your expertise, and Sir. Englishby.
The dissection of a swing on a crappy cell phone reveals more than meets the common eye on a hit.
Engineering, physics, anatomy, math, meet the batters box.
I see further, because I stand on the shoulders of giants

Once you get your mind wrapped around it it becomes simple. Of course when dealing with a student it's more about demonstrations if able or showing her the differences on video between her swing and an elite swing. Show a lot, tell a little. The teacher should do the hard work of digging through the details on their own.

This swing shows the shoulder turning later in the swing. The shoulders are still accelerating the bat through the ball.

Also in frame 9 of your DD's swing you can see the body has gotten a bit bent in a C shape. Still strong against front side so not that big of a deal. See in the clip how the hitter body is not quite so bent at the end of the swing. In the video of Callahan, you see her front hip, left hip, has slid away from the plate some. In your DD's swing the front hip slides further away from the plate, so she has to fight to maintain balance at the end of the swing. If she keeps the front hip a bit more towards the plate and let the back hip rotate into the plate a bit more she will be stronger in her finish, and likely stronger through the meat of the swing.

I have learned most of what I know from reading Mark and Steve's posts here and elsewhere and several really great coaches in our area.

The problem is in frame five.

I'm thinking maybe I'm not doing a good job of communicating my point. Two of them really. The second point about the lead arm and swing plane not being parallel with the shoulder rotation plane may be unclear with just words. One through eight on this link will illustrate it better than I can explain it. http://imageevent.com/siggy/hitting/ana ... i01.lion_s

Yes!!

I've heard the cure "don't drop the rear shoulder" used incorrectly far too often. If the rear shoulder is dropping on the stride/load, there is a problem. However, this age-old cue often gets used by coaches any time they see the rear shoulder get lower than the front during the swing. The rear shoulder must work down and through to maintain connection. The lower the pitch, the more tilt must happen.
