Tips for hitting the "rise ball..."

One of my DD's once threw a called inside screwball just as the batter squared to bunt, did the ball really break and hit the batter in the neck, or did it just appear to hit her in the neck?

Just asking, I don't know what to believe...


Did the batter really sound like Froggy from the little rascals for the next month or were my ears playing tricks on me too?

I'm so confused!

Inside fastball???? Why would a pitch need to break in order to hit a batter? Couldn't the pitch be thrown from the far left corner of the pitchers plate to a RH batter?

Well...LOT OF PAGES written about how you CAN'T, and should AVOID, hitting a "riseball". I've retired from the sport, AS A LEGEND, of breaking MANY PINATAS !! How many times did that supposedly smart parent fool other kids by pulling on the rope at the last second to fool these obviously rec pinata swingers!! If your dd can't hit a riseball, please give me your home address so I can send your family an invite to my next fiesta. BRING A GIFT and I'll know I could put your dd at the FRONT of the line when we break the pinata!! Height and AGE will not be a factor when I put them in order!!

It's not people that need convincing.

It's video cameras filming riseballs in profile that aren't convinced. It's the computer software used to track the flight trajectory of the ball that isn't convinced. It's gravity that isn't convinced. It's the study that shows a ball spinning beyond the the limits of human capability and still not "hopping" above it's original trajectory, that isn't convinced.

And I would add that of the list presented, PEOPLE are the only example that can actually be tricked by illusion. This possibility HAS to at least be CONSIDERED, or so you would think.

And yet SOME PEOPLE continue to state / believe that it is the video and physics which are "tricks," and that their eyes - viewing from a SINGLE one of the many available angles - have it right.

And not only that, they disparage others who choose to present the evidence. Not REFUTING the evidence - how could they - but simply inferring anyone who believes it is a moron.

It's why I love PEOPLE. We're an amazing bunch.


As for the point that it is a "riseball" because it crosses the plate at a greater elevation from the ground than when released, yeah, THAT'S what people mean when they describe a riseball hopping over a bat or climbing up the strike zone.

I sit on a bucket day in and day out and look at that pitch - I can't tell. It looks like it rises above its required trajectory.

It appears to be going one place and instead it goes another. You've seen the Finch you tube where she strikes out a dozen MLB All stars cause they've never seen a ball do that before.

I had dinner with Eddie Feigner one night and he told me about striking out a lot of MLB HOFers...MLB hitters see pitches that drop....they NEVER see pitches that end up at a higher elevation in the catchers mitt than when released by the pitcher. They would perceive a "jump" in the ball more than anyone else. A good 12 year old girl would destroy most MLB players.
