I've been coaching both boys and girls sports for over ten years now. When my son was playing LL baseball during one season, we had 3 girls who played on the team with us. I could rightly say that one of them belonged on the team because she could compete with the boys. The other two didn't want to have anything to do with it but played because "dad" wanted them to get better by playing against boys. It was to make them more aggressive and stronger so that they would dominate when they went back to play softball with the girls. At first it was difficult because everyone hates change -- good or bad. But after the novelty wore off, it was as if they were all a normal team and they functioned like one. My son has grown up now and is playing D2 baseball in college. To my surprise, during summer league when the boys play ball to keep in baseball shape, there was a girl on the team. She played in the infield. I was told that she played baseball to get ready for her upcoming softball season. People can you imagine a left handed slapper going against a pitcher throwing 90+ mph. It was something to see! The wonderful thing about it was that she was able to compete. Her intentions were not to play baseball in college but to use the higher competition to make her softball game better.

So, this experiment going on now will be yesterdays news shortly. It won't be a lot of transgendered players but a few and we won't even give it a second thought in the future. The key will be competition; can they compete -- no more or no less?

I just saw her/him practicing and it looks to me like the other players don't have very much to worry about!

Wilmer Valderrama (that 70's show)
Kunal Nayyar (Big Bang Theory)

They both play that "girly" character on their shows. Perfect fit

The real problem here is high school softball and the horrible politics and horrible coaching that comes with high school softball. 95% of high school softball does more bad for girls than good, example Azusa high school

Pretty stupid comment. If you think there are a higher percentage of good coaches in TB, you are wrong. If you think there are more politics in HS softball, you would also be wrong. If you think college coaches ignore HS softball, again, you would be wrong.

Azusa is not a strong team and this kid playing for them won't help or hurt them.

Hs softball is an experience these kids won't forget. They get to play with their friends for school pride....for four years......not just for some team that got thrown together for the summer. They might get their name in the paper......might make All League. Look at any college player profile......find one that talks more about their travel exploits than it does about their HS accomplishments.....good luck finding one.

I hit with an aluminum fungo bat.

Another observation, what you wear to practice shows your respect for the sport.
I have told and explained this to my dd long ago, when she was still nice, that in order to achieve or be a winner you must dress like one. This means wearing cleats, proper clothing like pants, shorts and a tee shirt. If you want to show that you want the job and to be able to show your best. In the still photo posted by ATWT the girl to the right must want to play and at least has respect for the game. She is wearing cleats, pants and a tee shirt. While Shim is wearing an unzipped sweat shirt, yoga pants and tennis shoes. If I was dirt poor, (and I am) you can beat if I had to go to the thrift store to get her cleats, she would have them. This story really does an injustice and makes a mockery of this sport.
We can only hope that Shim pulls a groin.

Chin Music wrote:"IT" really? You have "IT" for brains!

Chin Music, at first I gave the benefit of the doubt to Spaz on this one that the "It" reference was unintentional, but now I see from a subsequent post that it was not. That or he just wants to stir the pot.

I disagree with allowing this person to play on the softball team and it strikes me as extremely selfish on their part to distract from the other players to benefit their own want.

That said, it seems a bit beneath anyone to reference a human being as "It" and no matter what I think of Pat as a person I don't think it's appropriate for an adult (or child for that matter) to refer to an adolescent as an "It". Almost seems like something that should be censored from the site, but I won't hold my breath on the site moderator censoring himself.

My two cents...love it or leave it,

"Shim" (She and Him) denotes a human being.

"It" indicates that they are not a human being.

It can be argued whether Pat is a male or female depending on what part of the gender reassignment he's at. To me, he's a boy right now. A selfish and confused boy.

To answer your edit, there's no other reference to "It" that I can see before his post so I am assuming it is directed at your Subject title.

Either way it doesn't change anything.
