Friendly Etiquette

What's on your mind?

It is a sad day when the criteria for getting invited back to friendly’s is based on snack bar support rather than quality of play and team sportsmanship. A team BBQ is defiantly poor judgment and Iam a advocate for supporting snack bars. But when talk of blacklisting teams for reasons other than poor coach, player or parent sportsmanship is a slippery slope that our sport shouldn’t be heading down. It is about the girls, and they don’t have control over their parents decision to support the snack bar.

You're over thinking it.

It's not like there's some "snack shack police" monitoring snackbar support of all the participants. But if a team blatantly and obviously does not support the snack shack, and the host notices, bet your a** that most would not invite the team back. The purpose of hosting is to RAISE FUNDS FOR THE TEAM. Not to marvel at sportsmanship or perfect the art of field dragging.

It doesn't matter if you like it. It's just true.

The good news is it WON'T be obvious to the host if you're not an ahole. If they don't BBQ or have a mom pulling up in the mini van with 10 buckets of KFC, it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, calling it a business is off the mark. This is not a venture to line anyone's pockets. It is a fundraiser to offest the brutal cost of travel sports in exchange for VERY affordable (try free) venues for teams to get some games.

"Build it and they will come".... a nicely ran and stocked snackbar will make plenty of money at any friendly in any town with any team(s) attending. You have your people that will always bring their own goods and you have the people that will count on the snackbar food being decent.

I buy snackbar food and bring my own goods. If the snackbar is good, I buy more items, if it is not, I'm glad I brought my little ice chest. Besides Grandma comes to all my DD's games and noone throws together a sandwich like my Mom.

We traveled out of town for a friendly once and could not bring anything but Gatorade, Water and Seeds. Ordered a Chicken Bowl from the snackbar and it was the worst thing I had ever put in my mouth. Ended up ordering a Pizza, from a place advertised on the outfield fence, and had it delivered to the fields. Should our team never be invited back to play there again????

Demonboy's post is a good summary. Be discreet and respectful of the host understanding the reasons they are running the friendly. No one says you HAVE TO BUY SNACK BAR FOOD, but you should if you can(EVERYONE has a different situation). If you cant, then dont disrespect the host by setting up the weber or bringing in the 6 foot sub from subway and plopping it for everyone to see.... If its an experienced group hosting and a team pulls out the weber, I can all but guarentee a no invite clause for that team or a really sh!tty schedule if they need you next time.
