Private Tryout Question

What's on your mind?

by crankshaft » Fri Jan 04, 2019 8:26 am

Friends kid goes to a private tryout, really a one-on-one with the coach taking a look-see.
Coach offers a spot.
Heres some specs.
New 12u team.
Not even full roster yet.
Havent seen a full practice.
Havent met any others on said team.
Coach has been in travel ball for a few years.
No schedule provided.
Player has talent.

Family tells coach
Need to see team & practice befor making commiment.
Coach then says
Good luck to you and ends discussion.

Question
Who thinks it would be a smart idea to make a commitment with a team when they know nothing about it?

 going with bad decision!
Need to see first befor commitment!

Whats the thoughts on a coach like that here?

Coach is trying out too! Can’t see what kind of coach he or she is from a private workout. Coach pretty much let u know what kind of person he or she is by that response. Next.

First thought? Coach has a YUGE ego. Your friend made the right choice.

It would depend on who the coach was and who the team is

As it is a new team you would be silly to not want to see what other players are on the team.

We put my kid on a team that was a startup after the coach took a year or so off from coaching. The coach had a great team before and we thought some of those players would return or the coach would load up with more great players. After 4 months of struggling with too few or too little investment from her teammates we had to move on, even though we liked the coach and had put in a lot of effort, time and money.

Best way to tryout with a new team is to do so with a team practice and a friendly, it's not private and word will get out that you're trying out but to get the best feel for the team, coaches and parents, a team practice and then a friendly is really the best try out.

As a coach I always try to get players around the team. In this case I wonder who requested the private.

With a new team I would always want to see it first and yes the coach send a but arrogant.

Well Private tryouts are good if you're on a team looking for something better.
In this case there was no team built yet.
Yeah, you want your players to see the new players if they fit in or not.
And how practice is run.
Best case scenario you've already seen the team and how the coach runs it during games.

Some of these coaches amaze me. I always invite players to workout with my team. It gives the player and family a strong insight to how we run our program. The player can see how the players are and the parent can see how knowledgeable the coach is in what he or she teaches. Some coaches talk a good game then comes practice and they cant even field a ball or hit Infield outfield drills. Then in game they are yelling about crap they have no idea about...
Anyways I think we should rank coaches and see the results would be pretty cool!!!

Coach made the right decision. Good for him.
We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people. Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way!
