Score keeping question - fielders choice

What's on your mind?

by B286708 » Mon Apr 01, 2019 4:46 pm

With a runner on third the batter hit routine ground ball to the 3rd base fielder. The runner bluffs for home drawing attention of fielder. Fielder take step torwards runner (holding the runner on 3rd) and then throws to first base. The throw is late and hitter is safe at first. Is the hitter credited with a hit or a fielders choice?

If 3B could of thrown the girl out at 1B without the distraction. Fielders choice.

Fielder's Choice for batter/ runner. No E5.

Think the play is affected by timing, distance of ball from runner and runner leadoff is all relevant. And score of game
whether or not the runner at third is even relevant. Or super important to hold
runner.
Is it check the runner? Go 1.
Or be distracted by the runner?
Or hold runner?
If a tag possibility in action at the runner at third base, clearly fielder's choice. But depending on the lingering ongoing distraction time could be debated that it was a late throw because of 'late decision'
E5 error.

interpretation

Either
Fields choice
E5

Enjoy!

If I was scoring, fielders choice all the way, for the simple fact the batter does not deserve to record a hit.... And the 3rd baseman did her job of keeping the girl from scoring so she doesn't deserve an error. Thats my .02 anyway

Only way I would possibly score an error on that play was if 3B was totally lost and didn’t make a softball play. Looking a runner back, attempting a tag or throwing the ball to 1B is a is a softball play in my opinion.
