What Travel team-Built to Win or Develop?

What's on your mind?

by jonriv » Fri Sep 27, 2019 8:58 am

Obviously, it would be great to have a team that is built to win and develops players, but here in the HB world we deal in Black & White absolutes!!! So make a choice!

A team that works on player development

or

A team that Wins tournaments

Does age level matter? What ages for what type of team

jonriv - excellent post!

Sue Trubovitz, Turbo is spot on... you have to "recruit and develop talent in order to create a "winning tradition"

As you all know, most coaches/programs attempt to recruit the best "talent" and then do their best to "develop and refine" that talent.

However, several problems arise with lots of team/programs, levels of play, and a diverse talent pool of players.

- Who is doing the coaching/training?

As y'all know, there is a HUGE gap between "talented, committed, experienced coaches... and a couple of youth parent coaches... or even recent college graduates softball players... who have had limited experience is training and coaching... and dealing with those CSP (Crazy Softball Parents).

- How much "training and playing games" does the team do weekly... ALL YEAR ROUND?

- Who is training your pitching and catching talent? Are those players/parents committed to private lessons/homework?

As most of you know, great pitching and catching... are two of the main keys to success (winning)

- And the list goes on... and on...

Personal Example: My daughter was recruited onto a 13U team of talented athletes (11, 12, and 13-year-olds girls).

NOTE: Every player came from a parent-run association... and each player tried out and was recruited by two of the best coaches in the midwest (both of these 13U coaches are now Head Coaches @ DII colleges).

The 13U fall season was rough... but they were becoming more amazing every week and every game.

Their practices were LONG and HARD (average 4 hours)... they also had video and mental classes (hours/hours)

Parents and players had to be committed to long hours of team practice/conditioning/mental training.

By the start of summer league play and tournaments... this team was competing and WINNING at the local 16U and 18U levels... to become better by playing better talent.

The story ends that they finished 9th at PGF against some of the "best 14U teams in the Nation"

That team also finished 2nd at PGF 16U Platinum and 3rd as a 17U team at 18U PGF Platinium Nationals.

Several of the girls from that team/program... just won the 2019 NCAA DII National Championship with the help of one of the 13U same coaches and the other 13U coach took his college team to the school's 1st appearance at the 2019 NAIA National Championship.

Bottom line... without committed, talented, and knowledgable coaches... it is difficult to WIN... even if the team has some of the most talented student-athletes.
