07 Player...12U or 14U team

What's on your mind?

by maryclaire » Tue Dec 03, 2019 5:33 pm

Hi. My daughter is aging up next January (07 player) so realistically we would be looking for a 14u team to join in August. If we are ready to make the move to travel, am i better to look for a 12u team now, or have her tryout for a 14U team.

Agree, would have her start in 12U. if she is dominating her age group, then you could look at moving her up. I would look for a 2nd 12U team in case it is a good fit and they all move up together.

At 12u play age appropriate unless she's a beast. The maturity levels between the age groups is HUGE, a 14u team can have 05s playing on it. There are many many talented 12u teams here on HB looking for good players and I'm sure she can find one that's competitive enough.

Half of the 14u teams are about to go dark, let her play 12u, experience the push for PGF and play out the season playing with her girls her age.

To me the answer is 100% a function of the particular child. I believe that playing up can be the very best move for a kid who is able to raise their game to a noticeably higher level when playing with/against better competition. I experienced this myself back in the day playing basketball. OTOH there are kids whose game doesn't get better, the kid is intimidated, doesn't have enough self confidence, is miserable and sits on the bench. Not good. And BTW, all this applies to any age group as far as I can tell, from quite young to quite old.

My suggestion is to talk with the kid to see how they feel about playing with/against older kids. Kids that are bigger, stronger, faster, etc. If the kid is receptive give it a try. If it isn't working out your kid will know and, big deal, they go back to playing with their age group.

For me my kid's sports were about 2 things: Having fun and preparation for adulthood. It seems to me that a kid who successfully takes on the challenge of playing up, works on her game and sees herself thrive will be an adult more likely to take on challenges that result in personal growth and potentially more.

Just my view, a simpleton's perspective. Back in my hole.

Forgive me if my math and/or recollection is wrong, but don't most 12U that are going to age up in January generally begin that process the prior fall? I agree with the "play with your age" sentiments provided above, but the OP may want to be aware that some second year 12U teams may be calling themselves 14U for the August tryouts that they are shooting for.

If you daughter is 07, her age group would be a second year 12u team. Did you find a team for her?
