Lets talk cameras again

What's on your mind?

by Judd » Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:12 pm

Well my wife broke the SOny we had, so I guess now we can get a camera that works better for sports

Most important is a camera that records images FAST. When I snap the picture, thats what I want to record. What other features should I look for? My SOny was decent for $400, just didnt record as fast as I wanted it too.

I dont need the latest and greatest, last years models are fine as long as the camera is NIB (new in the box)

In my experience, Canon is the best for shooting action. Nikon isn't bad but I've always had better luck with Canon.

You will need to buy one with a detachable lens, though, to get the results you want.

Couldnt be any better than that 'Well hon, if you hadnt broke my camera I would have to be buying this Canon EOS 40 with these 13 difference lenses, filters, case and tripods."

Seriously, the Canon Rebel XT - 3 frames per second - lots of bells and whistles - camera itself around 400-500, the lens for outdoors, cheapest around 2-300 but then you can do anything.

This has worked great for me:

Canon 10.1MP EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera with a Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Zoom Lens.

I got a good deal at Costco on the Nikon D40x 10.1 MP, though the consensus on here seems to be that the Canon 40D is superior. I will say that you should get at least a 300mm lens if you want to capture the up-close action shots. Mine came with two lenses--the 55 and the 200--and the 200 doesn't quite get you close enough if you're trying to capture a slide on the far side of the diamond, or if you're out at the end of the fence and want to get in tight on a batter, etc. It's even less effective for soccer. I'm probably going to pick up a 400mm.

Agree about the 400, I have a 300 and its not bad. But on those days when you've been ejected and have to watch from the parking lot, the 400 is worth its weight in gold.

Skarp, I have the same camera and an "auto" kinda gal. I'm getting some good shots and love that I can zoom in on the software and it looks like I was up close, but what do I set it on to get those really awesome shots?

I probably need to just accept the fact that I need major help and take a class.

3Bsnag,
I've had good luck capturing shots in "semi-auto" mode. Set your camera up to do shutter speed priority. On a bright day, I use 1000/sec or 1500/sec. I use a Canon 10D, but I'm sure Nikon offers shutter speed priority.

You're talking to the wrong guy if you want expert advice on that...I haven't a clue what I'm doing, to be honest. I just set it on sports mode and shoot continuous shots as the action progresses...and hopefully a few of them turn out good.

I watched the instructional dvd's that came with the camera, and I was like "man, this sucker can do anything!" But then I'm out at the park and I can hardly remember how to turn it on.

Love technology...just hate the 400-page instruction manuals that inevitably come with it.
