1-George Hancock gets credit for what we now call softball. It was first played in 1887 in the gym of a boat club and was called indoor baseball.
2-Softball became the official sport name in 1926.
3-In 1990, softball was declared America's #1 team sport. It claimed 40 million participants.
4-The US softball team beat Japan in 2000 to win the gold medal.
5-The US softball team won back to back to back gold medals in 1996, 2000 and 2004
