Door knocker knuckles.

What's on your mind?

by Tucson » Thu Apr 24, 2008 10:01 am

I am unsure of this, so I want to check. Are you having batters line up the door knocker knuckles when they hold the bat?
Mine are not. They are lined up door knocker to the back knuckle.

Anyway, I have a dad arguing for lining up the door knocker knuckles and a student that doesn't want to do that. By the way, he isn't the child's dad.

What is correct? Amy

i might be wrong but i thought the latest "flavor of the month" theory of gripping the bat was more with the fingers, not the palm...
when i had the younger girls, i would have them hold the bat loosely and point it at me. i would tell them to hang on and i would try to pull the bat our of their hands. they would tighten their grip with their fingers, not the palms...i would then tell them that is how you hold a bat...not sure if im creating the right visual...
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

Unless you are promoting linear hitting, I'd stay away from "knocking knuckles".

I find that lining up door knocking and "punching knuckles" is compatable with the
palm up palm down position at contact.

Knocker-knuckles--lets the wrists snap through rather than roll (Ssarge can probably give you a much better/more detailed explanation). Same principle applies to golf, where it's even more uncomfortable when you first start using the correct grip.

We teach our girls to line up their knocking knuckles and palms up/palms down at contact as well.....this is 12U and seems to work.

Developing a high level swing is a very complex undertaking! There are probably seven million things I'd be concerned with before I spent two seconds thinking about the alignment of the knuckles. JMHO

Why is it you teach this? Could you explain what door knocking knuckles does
to help the swing? Thanks.

Tucson,

Remember to check everything anyone tells you, whether it's us on the board, Mike
Candrea or the ghost of Elvis, and check it against video of the best hitters in the world
(baseball and softball. Especially MLB if I'm being honest. They have the best swings in the world). Video of the worlds best is always your truth detector. If what I or anyone else tells you consistently conflicts with this video evidence, run.

FPdaddy gave some words of wisdom. The grip is way down the list of importance. You can have success with either grip. One just makes swing breakdown more probable IMO.

Best of luck.
