Question for Texas from California

What's on your mind?

by artomatic » Thu Apr 24, 2008 10:40 am

Hey y'all!
How do you get your berths for USA/ASA Nationals?
I see alot of your posts referring the Hall of Fame tournament in OK.
Do you have metros, or state tournaments?
If so, how many berths from those?
And since 14's are in Midland, will you get extra "fill-in" berths, and if so, how is that decided?

In California, we have the socal state tournaments, that only give 3 berths to each age division.
Then regionals, for another two, plus any fill in berths.
Plus northern areas have "metros" where I think 2 berths are given out.
Last year for the 12's there were a ton of fill-in berths handed out at regionals because California was hosting.
In fact, they could't find enough teams and started asking teams that had attended the socal state tournament...

What about other states, how do you guys get your berths?

Thanks and good luck in your seasons.

Texas has a State tournament that gives 3 berths, Metros get 2 from Houston and 1 (I think)from Dallas. We also have a Regional tournament that these others feed into (4th-15th from state and 3rd-9th from Metros) and the top 2 from that get quailified for Nats. There is also a seperate national qualifier that gives the winner of that a berth. Of course there is also the HOF which is always a biggie. It has taken me 3 years to figure this all out and i'm not even positive I have it down now after looking at the flow chart from ASA. :|

edited after looking at flow charts, yet again.

Unless, your in a Metro, then you don't go to state, you go through your Metro tournament. This is my first year to deal with DD being in a Metro so it really confused me. Those two (state and metros) feed into the regional tournament which gives you another shot. I don't know if any other cities other than Dallas and Houston have Metros but maybe Austin/San Antonio?

Lefty's got it right. By date, the process is (for 12U, other ages are similar):

May 24/25 - HOF qualifier, the top 2 advance to OKC on June 6-8, top 8 at HOF advance to Montgomery.

June 6-8 - Nat'l qualifier in Nacogdoches (that's nak-uh-DOH-chus), winner advances to Montgomery

June 13-15 - State tourny, top 3 advance to Montgomery

July 11 - Regionals in Lake Jackson, top 2 advance to Montgomery.

By my count, that's a maximum of 8 Texas teams that can advance (assuming the 2 at HOF make the top 8).

Do they have to be Texas teams, or can any one come in and play and snag a bid?
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

just my opinion, but if you're going to try to go in somewhere and snag a bid, Texas should be last on your list of destinations...

I rather think that your team needs to be registered through the Texas ASA to participate. However, it IS Texas and if several hundred dead people :o could vote LBJ into office a few years back then you might be able to wiggle your way onto the list. Come on down! :P

One Berth - the National Qualifier Berth in Nacogdoches, is an at-large berth that can be won by a team from outside of Texas. The rest are Texas, or berths for Region 07, Texas, which includes Texas, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.
