So Cal State Champion Curse

What's on your mind?

by Ritalin » Fri May 02, 2008 10:32 am

Is this really true?

Can anyone recall a State Champion who has won Nationals in any division any year?

Maybe West Coast Voodoo is the only team that has a shot.

I think this curse is more of a reality and we kind of talked about it last week. It doesnt matter how good you are at the top(stacked teams that obviously have the talent to win), you need timely plays and timely breaks along the way in conjunction to beat the teams around you in the same position (a great draw at so-cal states also helps). And it doesnt matter if its 10U or 18U. All these BIG games seem to come down to a couple of plays made or not made... and its not on the players shoulders.... over or under coaching can kill also. I heard of a few stories along those lines at the Force tourney also. JMO.
The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure.
These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur.

I believe the 10U team back in 2001 (USA Athletics) won both States & Nationals that year.

On the topic of SoCal States....when will they start posting the list of entered teams. I want to say they posted it much earlier than this last year. I know the usual suspects will be there, but a publicized list that includes several teams that should be playing the Quicksilver Classic would make for interesting conversation on the Bucket. JMO.

If you are saying there are teams that shouldn't play State I don't agree. I am always amazed at the teams that play all year long and then "give up" in May and bypass the Socal State tournament. Why not come out and see how you measure up against all of the competition? Isn't that what all the work was for?

Interesting point Spaz, I actually agree with you to an extent......in fact, I'm not sure how competitive we will be at State, but I think it's important that the girls attend for the experience. Additionally, there are berths to Western Nationals/Regionals on the line. However, given the format, some teams might be better served playing in a 4-game guarantee in Mission Viejo where they have a real chance to compete. I guess what I'm saying is knowing what I know about the folks on this board, there is certain to be some "discussion" about whether Jynx should be participating at states. Just kidding str8up. ;) You better be there!

Jynk should get that weekend off, give the girls a little break. They can invite their friends from Corona, Angels that is, and they can invite their friends from OC Impact.
