Scoring players at tryouts?

What's on your mind?

by Judd » Fri May 16, 2008 6:02 pm

I am having tryouts Sunday, have about 15 girls scheduled to come. Most I know, some I dont. Does anyone use a sheet to score them? I was making something in excel but figured i'd ask the more experienced.

BTW, my plan

Ctachers and pitchers warm up and tryout. See how pitchers throw, change ups, speed, accuracy. See how catchers block, react etc. Later have catchers throw down to 2nd base.
While pitchers and catchers are doing their thing rest of team is catching pop ups from a pitching machine

Then pitchers and catcher do popups.

Whole team does around the horn or another drill I know but dont know the name. Stand at 3rd, pick up ball from mound throw to 1st, run around 2nd field a grounder throw to 1st, field another gorunder as they charge in and thrw to 1st, then field a bunt and underhand to home.

Hitting off the pitching machine.

15 girls, 3 hours, doable??

This will be the only tryout. I thought I was going to have 20 or so but that changed. Maybe I will ask all to come to practice and cut after a couple practices?

You might check with the 95 Texas Glory coaches. They have tryouts almost every month. Lol.

JK, of course. Nobody has "open practices" every month.

Good luck tomorrow! It's too late for any major changes, but I would consider doing one thing different - evaluate the pitchers and catchers after everything else is done and the rest of the team is dismissed. This will allow your P/Cs to go through all the other drills (they might show you something at another position) and it will avoid having the rest of the team wait on the batteries. You'll be able to get a really good look at the P/Cs this way as well.

Sorry this is late...we were playing softball!

I agree with Martin. Evaluate pitchers and catchers after everyone else is gone.

I would also keep a written evaluation for two reasons. 1) It makes it appear that you are evaluating everyone fairly and based on the same qualities even though you probably don't need to. 2) It gives you a tool to help explain to a parent why their DD didn't make the cut.

Lastly, I would DEFINETLY hold at least one practice after the tryout before picking a team.

My son plays travel lacrosse and his team held tryouts on 2 different days cutting down from about 50 boys to about 35. Then had two practices to get down to the final roster of 20.
