16U coaches abandon team

What's on your mind?

by Cookie » Wed Jul 09, 2008 4:03 pm

Did you hear about a So Cal 16U Team that a week before the Colorado fireworks Tourney the coaches abandon the team. One coach said he could not get time off work the other coaches said that they could not afford to go and left the team high and dry for a Big Showcase tourney.

The coaches that use to coach this very successful team but stepped down at the end of last year changed their plans and dropped everything they were doing and take this team to Colorado and coached them for the week.

How mad would you be if your coaches bailed out on you right before a showcase tourney? These guys did this so the girls could play and then had parents bitc%ing about the line up. I am not sure if it is the air quality or something they put in all that bottled water we drink but are people getting dumber. What's going on here?

Maybe that's why the first set of coaches bailed. They were tired of hearing parents bit$h and whine. Whiny smarta$$ parents have really gotten out of control.

Their is a difference between talking trash and telling the truth. Isn't this a softball discussion board? Isn't this a softball issue? If I was on a team and the coaches did that to my kid I would be pissed. Bring things like this out for everyone to see and it might stop some other coaches down the road from making the same mistake.

Isn't the Colorado Fireworks tourney something you plan for all year? Coach #1 should have talked to his employer back in September and if there was any issue about taking time off to coach the team, he should have stepped down. Coach #2 should have been saving money since September to make this important trip. Maybe there are extenuating circumstances. Maybe something unforeseen and unavoidable came up at work, or maybe some unexpected expenses wiped out the family savings. If so the coaches should have communicated their situations to the parents. Luckily the team still went to the tournament. Too bad the parents didn't appreciate what the new coaches did for them.

In case nobody has noticed....the economy in SoCal has taken a rather precipitous crap. Lots of people are losing their homes. Jobs in the real estate industry have disappeared. Stuff happens at work....maybe this coach didn't get paid for his/her time off.

I don't know what happened to these coaches, but I would seriously doubt that they did any of this to hurt the team, nor does it lend itself to being a planned action. I'm betting that the inability to coach their team ate them up inside.

I know it ate me up last week.

Same thoughts I had when I read this post. Tough when I get the calls from families that they cant make tournaments - same deal most of the time. We have had to adjust playing schedules for the same reasons.

Bad all over, at least in places where you need gas to go anywhere - tough times. But like all tough times, it will end.

Sam and Donnie have both hit it right non the head....It has been a REAL issue with everybody which includes the coaches. There is an awful lot of money that comes directly out of the coaches pockets for various small things which really add up over a period of time. Even though our government may disagree, it sure feels like a recession to me!

everybody is hurting right now...were chasing nationals still and the gas is killing me...no more tahoe...gotta squeeze everything in the civic or couldnt afford it...if we qualify for nationals, gonna be dads and dds piling up in a suburban or tahoe and splitting costs of gas...at least gas is still under $4 once you leave cali...
