MENARCHE

What's on your mind?

by anonfp » Wed Jul 23, 2008 1:25 pm

How does this affect a young athlete? Sorry, this may sound like a stupid question, but I grew up in a family with all boys, so I am stupid in this realm.

Is there a significant change in maturity at this stage of a young woman's development? Is there a noticble increase in strength?

Other than the emotional roller coaster that dd may be riding, what else should a coach/dad expect? Don't say boys...........I know that one is coming.

DD is 11 1/2. This seems a little young, but not alarming.

Experienced coaches and moms, help me understand.

Is this a voice of experience?

I don't have a clue what to expect. I'm glad dd and I are close enought that she could talk to me about it, but I wonder how long that will last? :)

Your first menstrual period is called menarche (say "MEN-ar-kee"). It usually starts sometime between ages 11 and 14.1 But it can happen as early as age 9 or as late as 15. If you are a teenage girl, see your doctor if you have not started having periods by age 15. Menarche is a sign you are growing up and becoming a woman. Along with starting your period, your body is changing. You've begun to develop breasts, pubic hair, and underarm hair, and your hips have begun to widen. Menarche also means that if you have sex, you can get pregnant. You can even get pregnant in the month before your first period starts.

It will last until those evil boys come along and mess everything up. :?

Seriously, my dd didn't get her muscle mass until about 2 years after. Suddenly this year she is very strong (just turned 14). There are people that have know her for a very long time that don't recognize her.

Just watch the mood swings!!! That was about it for us, oh and boys!!!

It is a different experience for every female. Some simply go along as if nothing changes and others are tormented by evil creatures called hormones. Your daughter may be at either end of the spectrum or fall somewhere in between. Each month may be different as well. PMS is a real thing and often those suffering from it fail to realize why they are having such a bad day or why everybody seems to be against them until bam, oh yeah, my period.... The female body will grow for about a year following the first period and then thats it. This includes a growth spurt in feet too which I know sounds crazy. Females are often more prone to inuries at certain times of the month than others. Its all hormone related. Some hormones soften ligaments like they were designed to do for childbirth and so the swinging back and forth between hormone cycles can be a killer for knees, etc. Crazy, but true. Even hamstring injuries(personal experience here for both)... Weight change can cause grief . Some girls like their new assets and others are uncomfortable with them. Shoot, they bounce when you want to run and so get her a good sports bra! And always be prepared if you travel with her, just in case she forgets to be prepared and gets caught in an emergency. Sometimes periods are irregular at first and are hard to track. Keep a bottle of Aleve handy too. Naproxen is great for muscle pain and thats what we are talking here. You know those cramps you get in your calf or elsewhere that you have to stretch out? Well, thats what is going on inside your daughters body and she can't stretch it out and it can hurt so bad she passes out. But, if you are lucky you and she will hardly be aware of it at all. Hope this helps. ;)

Didnt know there was a name for that. 20 or so years ago, I used to take my older kids and their friends on camping trips up in the arizona mountains. I swear to God, every child of the female persuasion in our neighborhood had her first period on one of my camping trips - usually 25 miles from a paved road, 20 miles further to a store that sold things that girls needs (anyone heard of Clints Well, its south of Happy Jack, north of Strawberry - they carry the stuff if it happens to you). For a while I considered getting a signed document from the parents that they had already explained to their darling daughter what it was all about. Nothing like 6-8 teens sitting around on a tailgate of a 4-runner up around 9000 feet, being told stuff by a guy that shouldnt have had to. I still remember campsites up in the az wilderness by which kid it happened there to.
