hitting? Thumb touching ear?

I have some different opinions on this.

Her instructor has her holding the bat back and away. While others encourage the bat closer, where the thumb can touch the ear. Her instructor says this promotes a wrap around swing and discourages it.

Uggh why does it have to be so complicated
