Drop Dead - Score Book & Stats

What's on your mind?

by RedMachine » Fri Nov 07, 2008 11:08 am

Need verification on how to keep the correct stats or score book when it comes down to Drop Dead -

Last year my DD played for a team that kept records of team stats – but when it came down to the final score of the games, it was very interesting how he kept his books. Game vs. Corona Angels - final Scored was 9-2 however, a half of top of inning lasted about 30+ minutes. My DD’s team batted in the last half of that inning and with two outs the game was called. According to our coach the game reverted back to the last completed inning even though we all knew that we didn’t have a chance to score 7 runs with two outs.

He is/was very adamant about his team stats – HOW DO YOU KEEP THE CORRECT STATS WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO DROP DEAD:

1) Pitcher that gave up the 7 runs – Do the runs disappear because the game reverted back to the last completed inning?

2) How about the team that tied/lose – Do they give credit to the girls that had ie: hits, stolen bases, RBI’s during that inning or do you/we pretend that inning never existed?

3) How about the Pitcher that gave up the 7 runs – do you/we give her credit for a win/tie when she knows that she didn’t deserve it?

Any positive feed back is greatly appreciated – Have a great weekend at the fields………………

the vast expanse of stats known as "the grey area"...

In a friendly at least, I would think that even though a score might revert, you keep the stats.
If kids' hits, or pitchers' earned runs are getting wiped out due to the revert rule, then you're not getting a realistic picture of their abilities.

Although stats aren't the only way to judge a player's talents. In fact, a kid could be hitting .500, but if all the hits are bloopers and spinners, is she a good hitter?
Or a kid could be mashing the ball, but right at fielders...or a shot to right field and gets thrown out at 1st...

guess it depends on each team's philosophy.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP TWO SCOREBOOKS, ONE FOR FRIENDLY'S AND THE OTHER FOR TOURNAMENTS. MORE THAN LIKELY YOU WILL HAVE YOUR KIDS WORK ON BUNTS, PUSH BUNTS ETC. AND LET THEM HIT AWAY ON A 3-0 COUNT IN A FRIENDLY, BUT IN A TOURNAMENT ITS MORE ABOUT THE PERCENTAGE PLAY....JMO

I keep all the stats regardless of drop dead reverting back. If a batter gets a hit then she got a hit. If there is a strike out then there's a strike out. I even count the runs. Why take something away that has really happened? I don't like the drop dead rule, I'd rather see No New inning instead. Why not let the inning finish. What's another 5-10 minutes.

See OP

however, a half of top of inning lasted about 30+ minutes

It would be hard to maintain a friendly schedule where there is usually only 10 min allotted between games. Since the score doesn't matter it's not a big deal to end it when time is up.

But they had 2 outs already and were playing the mightly CA's. So it would have ended real fast. In general, a 30 minute inning is probably the exception and not the rule. I understand trying to keep the games moving. When we host friendlies we add extra time between games to allow for no new. Either way you run the friendly I keep all the stats.

I don't want to get everybody's undies all bunched up again as to whether or not a friendly should be drop dead and/or revert, etc......BUT, if you do decide that it's drop dead and reverts back to the last inning then the stats for the incompleted inning should not count because technically it didn't happen.......ANOTHER BUT, who cares.....IT'S ONLY A FRIENDLY WHICH IS ORGANIZED PRACTICE WHERE 2 TEAMS GET TO PLAY EACH OTHER!!!

Im not sure how I would resopnd if one of my players told me, "Coach, its only a friendly, it really doesnt matter". In reality, its "only a friendly" to Me, and the person I'm coaching against. The players warm up the same, and work just as hard. Some of them even work harder cuz they are trying to take advantage of the extra time. Its all softball, friendly, tourney, scrimmage, whatev. I cant disrespect hard work. If the players on my team are working hard, I value it wherever it happens. I couldnt care less what a clock tells me. As a matter of fact I keep stats in my head on who carries my buckets and puts the bases away!

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE CORRECT STATS WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO DROP DEAD:

Players stats should be kept as played until the time is called.
Drop dead is only for win loss info.

The stats are for upset parents and accountants. When it comes to your DD's team you know who the players are.

Then again, you have the creative coaches who manipulate the stats to their own advantage (and they do!!!!)... Like Art says...the stats are the best way to keep track on how the girls are doing... It only matters to some (egotistical?) coaches and parents that the "team looks good" by reverting back in scores or stats...(hey my best pitcher gave up a bunch of hits and runs that last inning...but since we reverted back, guess she didn't REALLY GIVE THOSE UP after all....) That happened quite a few times on our team last year...
