What's on your mind?

:?: Why cant a girl do both? Heard of any that do? What are some reasons behind not allowing a girl to do both if shes good at both.

I suppose as a younger player they could do both. Older players (13 and older) IMO need there legs for either position. I want my DD to keep her legs as fresh for as long as she can for pitching.

Also consider physical build, if DD is on the taller side with longer legs catching will be real hard on her knees, not to mention how tired she would be if she caught a game and then had to pitch a game in a tournament. Between pitching lessons, hitting lessons and catching lessons (Fielding lessons too) you must be awefully rich to pull that weekly bill off... :o

Wouldn't a girl have to be really super fast to catch her pitch? Besides... she might get tired too! :?

I've got 2 teams that bring 3 girls each to pitching lessons. One team is 8U and the other is 12U.

There isn't a catcher available that can handle these girls that are working on their pitching.

I have asked the coaches if the girls can just catch for each other. They certainly can't pitch, if the beginning catchers can't catch.

Remember when we were young and we just went out and played the game. No lessons, no speed and agility training, and an off season?
Guilty as others, I'm just saying.....

That's what I'm saying! After running around for a year to different lessons, we have stopped all just to see what kind of work ethic the spoiled one has. Other than hitting, that answer would be none.

So as of last Saturday, we're kicking it old school at my house. 20-30 minutes every day immediately after basketball practice. Get your butt out in the yard while I chuck balls at you with no glove. You got catchers gear on, suck it up. I'm sort of kidding, I may let you field grounders at the park for a treat.

Back on subject:
I just can't see how an older, more specialized, player could play both of those positions well. And agree with all others, way too hard on the legs.

I really don't see why any sane person wants to catch anyway. You have to be kinda twisted and a control freak.

And when that first foul tip hits your DD's pitching hand you're wondering "what was I thinking?"

My DD does both at times, but she is only 13. I've been telling her that we need to narrow it down to one or the other (and of course infield and outfield work, she plays SS, a little 3rd and a little OF).

She tried to pitch in one tournament after catching a game, and it didn't go well. I think she could go from pitching a game to catching a game without too much trouble, but the other way (catching first) gets her legs too tired.

Being in WV, we're lucky to have a legitimate pitching coach in the area, but that's all we have, so I don't have to worry about paying her catching/hitting/fielding instructor, he works for free :|
