fastpitch pitcher playing basketball....?

What's on your mind?

by jag1 » Sat Dec 20, 2008 4:54 pm

I heard what I think is the most ludicrous argument for not playing softball from a high school girls basketball parent today...........apparently, because her daughter pitches, it will mess up her basketball shot....!!!??? I'm open-minded, but how does her kid pitching affect her basketball..? this is the same parent that swears playing golf just ruins little susie's softball swing...! Is there any validity to this crap...?

My daughter was playing both softball and travel ball (All Net) basketball. Alot of running from one practice to another but other then that no problems. She was in the best shape anyone could believe. The softball coach was amazed by her speed and aggressiveness development and couldn't believe she was practicing or playing games 4 to 6 hours a day and still maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The basketball coach was amazed at her ball handling and team play development. The fact is, both basketball and softball skills enhance each other and don't work against each other. I would be mindful of injuries and if your daughter is "intense" like mine is, advise her to slow down as to prevent injuries.
To each their own.

Yeah, and everyone keeps telling me that all the pitching practice will soon mess up both my DD's overhand throwing.

I would advise you to have both your DD's practice throwing over handed. I dont know if it was the pitching practice or what but my DD use to have a cannon arme a few years back then all of a sudden she couldnt even throw the ball to 1B... Granted we hardly ever worked on over handed throwing but as soon as we went back to the basics it came back to her. Its still not as strong as it use to be but at least she can get the outs needed...

For some reason this seems to be a problem for alot of pitchers...

I believe that it doesn't have anything to do with pitching or the pitching motion or practice, but the lack of practicing overhand throwing and practicing other positions...While DD1 is pitching DD2 plays 1st base, and while DD2 is pitching DD1 plays 3rd and or SS...DD1 has a rocket arm both throwing and pitching, DD2 is a bit slower on both counts...

I recall Lisa Fernandez also played basketball. She said that her basketball coach caught her
pitches every day after basketball practice. I guess basketball didn't mess up her pitching

True, come on you know pitchers CAN'T play defense.....Have her jog it over to 1st base and underhand it....Much safer! :D
