Coach Fired after 100-0 Girls BB Win

What's on your mind?

by Sam » Mon Jan 26, 2009 8:52 am

Don't ever mess with the karma police....they will get you. This idiot deserved to get fired. Full court pressing until there were only 4 minutes left in the game....tossing up 3-pointers in the fourth quarter...must not have taken the ACE Certification testing....

So what did the coach of the losing team get? An extension?

So here's my question...If your opponent can't defend the bunt and their pitchers are throwing meatballs at 40 mph, what are supposed to do? DD's team had this happen, eventually the coach started to tell them leave the bases early and that made the opposing coach upset. So what do you do? Keep the inning going until time runs out? Just asking, I really do not have the answer. I do see your point about the stealing though, that's pretty extreme. Although there could be a history between the teams too

The entire team was invited to a Dallas Mavericks game in a luxury booth by Mark Cuban....true.

A myriad of lessons to be learned.

In defense of the losing team, at least they didnt quit. My oldest daughter played on an all-star team on her first ever tournament. They were down 29-1 , the head coach did what any true blue daddy ball coach would do, he pulled his daughter, set her out, and asked my dd (not a pitcher) to pitch. She did, told me later, 'heck, Dad, how could I do any worse ? ' Fortunately that guy didnt coach any more tournaments, but he did get elected president of the board.

Mike & Mike in the morning had this on today.

Apparently the 100 point coach pulled his starters, stopped any kind of press at all and wound it down when it was 25-0. ( It sounded like they might have ramped back up in the second half though) This from both the winning and losing coach. This is a case of parents talking to the press and leaving out some detail. It was 59-0 @ the half, if the score would have been 69-0 at the end of the game I'm pretty sure you'd have the same conversation going on. So the winning coach pulls his starters and puts in a bunch of 2nd and 3rd string players each with something to prove. How exactly do you control these kids who want to prove they deserve a starting spot. I'm not justifing the actions just saying that if they got a shot every minute of a 12 minute half and made every 2 pointer because they are a good team then you'd add another 24 points to the half time score and end up 83-0 toss in the foul shots and the occasional 3 pointer and it could get out to 100 easy. My point is it's called a competition for a reason. The actions of the parents and assistant coach was unacceptable if it was true but. I think it would have been more insulting if everytime a kid misdribbled and the ball rolled out to centercourt that all the winning players ran from it like it was cock roach. I haven't seen the box score and don't know any details other then the newspaper and Mike and Mike but I do feel this coach and team are being bashed a bit. Who ran to the media with this story anyhow a pizzed off parent of the losing team who's DD got her feelings hurt.

Mike & Mike's account is different from the original story in Rivals.com which states:

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."

Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.

That doesn' jibe with the M&M scenario.

"I respectfully disagree with the apology, especially the notion that the Covenant School girls basketball team should feel 'embarrassed' or 'ashamed,' " part of the post says. "We played the game as it was meant to be played and would not intentionally run up the score on any opponent. Although a wide-margin victory is never evidence of compassion, my girls played with honor and integrity and showed respect to Dallas Academy."

Grimes also included the quarter-by-quarter scoring on his post: 35, 24, 29, 12.
