Coaching Drama Queens

What's on your mind?

by Fanof12 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 6:27 am

I've got 2 kids this year that are turning into real drama queens when it comes to injuries. They get hit by a pitch or a bad hop and they over react. Now they want to sit out or limp around the field when it isn't a bad injury at all.

I probably sound callous here but this is a game of many bumps and bruises and other kids don't act this way. I don't want this getting contagious with other kids and I don't want them embarassing our team.

So I come down hard on them and sit them out for the rest of the game. I figure creating consequences is the best way to deal with it. I'm not sure this is working though.

Any ideas that can help me?

I've seen this very thing but never had a gal on one of my teams do it .... There was one gal on DD's HS team though who was a good ball player and did this every game up until her Senior year ... I remember one game where she even pretended she was going to faint ... she looked like Red Fox in that old show Sanford and Son when he would stager around and call to Elizabeth that he was having the big one ... LMAO !

The SS that I played with used to do that. We got tired of it and just let her lay there, in the dirt at SS, one inning. (We were 18 and over.)

Darn, I thought this was a thread about "Coaching Drama Queens" and I was gonna list my list of Drama Queen Coaches; the sad part is most of the list would be male.

The more attention you pay to it, the worse it gets. Once you have checked to make sure there really is nothing seriously wrong, walk away and leave it alone. ( make sure you know your kids, also).

Check how the parents react. Do they give it a lot of attention? If so, you have a huge problem.

Getting some serious splinters on the bench may help, it's amazing how the pain in one's butt negates the "injury." After one of these episodes, I sit the girl down for game after game. Sooner or later she will ask why she is sitting. I tell her, " I was worried that your injury( or condition) would get worse. " After that, a miracle occurs and the once deadly injury is just fine.

Go ahead and throw it out there. Who are the top drama queen coaches? This could be fun.

Ha, it would be a little fun; however, as I am not very anonymous and actually do umpire teams/games/tournaments represented on this forum, I could never do such a thing...

So I'll go with Earl Weaver, the sorest loser that ever lived...
