Injuries???

What's on your mind?

How many of your DD's are already injured this early in the season? How long are they out? And what are they doing to stay ready?

I've had a few of my players injured. All but one were temporary (1 day) and one is out for minimum of a week. Almost all from playing hard...

Our team has had tons of injuries this year. At one point in the Fall season we were down 5 girls. My DD broke her leg sliding into home in early December. She recently got the ok to practice at low speed, which is impossbile for her since she has only one speed which is FULL Speed!! She was depressed when she first got hurt, so we tried to kept her active mentally by watching practices and games. Then once her cast came off, we let her do modified batting lessons, sit ups and arm wieghts to build her strength back up. Now she is practicing with the team and hoping to get an inning or two soon. She should be fully released next week. She is itching to get out there!! All in all she healed quickly since we were first told it would be 6 months, but it has only been 4 months. Her goal is to be back in full action by states! Knowing her that won't be a problem.

Your team may not be healthy enough to go to states. You won't find football teams with an injury rate that high. Your coaches must be doing something wrong.

I have seen many coaches spend very little time with the girls while they are stretching....This should be a crucial and focused time for the girls as most of them do not stretch properly....

I'm sure you've seen it....Coaches BS'n with the parents while the girls are in a circle in the outfield playing grab ass and talking about everything NOT related to stretching or softball....Coaches should be getting more involved with this process......

Some teams do and it shows.....Players are going to get hurt no matter what you do but proper stretching can minimize the amount of injuries and the healing time!

Actually our coaches are extremely protective of the girls. They are out there with them during the warm ups. We have been with this head coach for three years now and until this past year, we had really no injuries to speak of. I think this year is a fluke. Its softball and they play hard. :)

Your coaches for fortunate to have a team of girls that play hard...now start teaching them to play smart.

Couple years back the Yankees got a new 'conditioning Coach" ... he changed their spring training regime from long runs to short sprints only ... the result was alot of pulled hammies, players on IR and I believe the Conditioning Coach is now buffing floors somewhere ,.... no telling why a team has a spike in injuries ... maybe they were just playin hard ... maybe weekend is right ... but you need to monitor your DD's conditioning because MANY softball programs don't do it ... plus the nature of this sport creates imbalances in the musclature ...

Most of the recent information I have been hearing is that static stretching (touch your toes, pull on your arm) is overrated as a pre-game/practice injury preventer and that the way to get kids ready for action and minimize injury is to go with a dynamic stretching drills (high knees, butt kicks, carioca etc.)

Funny that the drills that football coaches have been doing with kids from ages 8 on are the ones that are suddenly acknowledged as injury preventers.

Static stretching obviously improves flexibility which is beneficial, but I've heard a fairly consistant message at the NSC clinics that it's not what the coaches speaking at those events believe helps prevents injury.
