Rule 12 Major Changes
New
12.13.5
Regarding the runner illegally taking out a defender…
The runner shall not slide out of the baseline nor slide
outside her reach of the base she is attempting to slide

Rationale: Additional circumstances of unnecessary
contact between players that result in the runner who
targets the fielder rather than the base being called out
and ejected.

I think this might be it. A coach had mentioned it to us last year.

Well she was within guidelines of the rule that you posted, what is the problem?

That's an NCAA rule. Looks like it was an Oak Park HS game. If so, was it varsity or JV?

Where was the runner supposed to slide to? The catcher was standing on home plate, she needs to become a first baseman with bases loaded. She was out of position. Shortstop didn't do her any favors with that throw. I see no rule violation. Get a load of that umpire at the end of the clip, he never moved throughout the whole play

Hmm, MaxPreps showed #22 playing 11 of 12 games...

I showed two well respective umpires the clip today, they both said the same thing. The runner is allowed 3 feet on either side of the line, and as long as the runner can touch the plate with a hand or foot, which they said she could, she's legal. Thanks again

FTR, the base line marked on the field doesn't matter. Runners are allowed to alter their path to the base by 3' to avoid a tag - which obviously was not the case since the catcher didn't have possession of the ball and the runner would have already been forced out if she had caught it.

In fact, missing the catch made the catcher more vulnerable to the runner and to an obstruction call. If the runner had been forced out before sliding, more restrictive rule(s) for retired runners would have constrained her more from interfering with the fielder.

Another aspect not touched upon is the rule against malicious contact. The slide was a little odd which resulted in her rolling up on the catcher. IMO, it doesn't appear to be malicious, but it could have been cleaner.

Ideally, the catcher makes the catch and quickly clears away from the plate so the runner at most only makes contact with a back foot that isn't bearing much weight.

I hope the catcher has made a full recovery. Best wishes on the rest of the season.
