Hmm, MaxPreps showed #22 playing 11 of 12 games...
I showed two well respective umpires the clip today, they both said the same thing. The runner is allowed 3 feet on either side of the line, and as long as the runner can touch the plate with a hand or foot, which they said she could, she's legal. Thanks again
FTR, the base line marked on the field doesn't matter. Runners are allowed to alter their path to the base by 3'
to avoid a tag - which obviously was not the case since the catcher didn't have possession of the ball and the runner would have already been forced out if she had caught it.
In fact, missing the catch made the catcher more vulnerable to the runner and to an obstruction call. If the runner had been forced out before sliding, more restrictive rule(s) for retired runners would have constrained her more from interfering with the fielder.
Another aspect not touched upon is the rule against malicious contact. The slide was a little odd which resulted in her rolling up on the catcher. IMO, it doesn't appear to be malicious, but it could have been cleaner.
Ideally, the catcher makes the catch and quickly clears away from the plate so the runner at most only makes contact with a back foot that isn't bearing much weight.
I hope the catcher has made a full recovery. Best wishes on the rest of the season.
